To rout a smooth, repeatable curve on a board corner, make a template for the radius, register it against the board edges, rough-cut away most of the waste, then guide a router bit’s bearing along the template to finish the curve. The jig sets the shape; secure clamping keeps it in place while you cut.
What you need
- Half-inch or three-quarter-inch plywood or MDF scrap for the template
- A compass, jigsaw, sanding block and 80- or 100-grit sandpaper
- Glue and screws for template edge guides
- A router bit with a bearing positioned to follow your template, plus a compatible router
- Clamps to secure the jig and workpiece
WOOD Magazine’s corner-routing method uses a top-bearing bit. Trend describes a similar jig using a bearing-guided flush trimmer. The bearing must contact the template while the cutter reaches the workpiece; confirm the bearing position, cutter, shank and router setup are compatible before cutting.
Make a corner-radius template
- On plywood or MDF scrap, mark the center point and use a compass to scribe the radius you want. The template arc should match the finished corner.
- Cut the arc on the waste side to make a rough semicircular template. Sand to the line with a block and 80- or 100-grit paper to create a smooth guide surface.
- Add edge guides with glue and screws. Position them so they register against the workpiece’s adjacent edges while leaving room for the router base and bit to travel along the full curve.
WOOD Magazine’s instructions explain this template-and-guide layout. Trend’s corner-jig guidance instead describes an exact-size template with two stops. Either way, the jig must locate consistently and leave a clear, supported path for the router.
Rough-cut and rout the corner
- Place the jig against the board’s adjacent edges and trace the curve onto the corner.
- Remove most of the waste with a jigsaw, staying just outside the line. Leaving a small margin gives the router material to trim; do not ask the bit to remove the whole corner.
- Position and clamp the jig securely. In Trend’s arrangement the jig is clamped underneath the work; use a layout that holds both jig and workpiece firmly without obstructing the router path.
- Set the router so the bearing rides the template and the cutter trims the board. Make the pass around the curve with control, keeping hands clear of the cutter and following the router and bit manufacturers’ operating instructions.
- After the cut, check the corner and repeat the same template setup on other pieces that need a matching radius.
The rough-cut-then-template-trim sequence is described by both WOOD Magazine and Trend. A stable jig, firm clamping and secure workholding are essential to keeping the router on its intended path.

Choose the right bit and avoid a common mix-up
Look for a bearing-guided flush-trim bit suited to the template arrangement. In the WOOD Magazine setup, the bit’s top bearing follows the template. Trend’s description likewise calls for a bearing-guided flush trimmer. There is no single universal bit model, cutter diameter, shank size or router specified for every setup, so check your equipment and template dimensions.
This process rounds the board’s corner outline. It is not the same as rounding over the board’s edge profile. A roundover bit forms a shaped profile along an edge; the template-following trim bit cuts the board corner to a curved outline. Whiteside’s router-bit manual lists roundover bits as a separate edge-forming category.

Why the jig matters
The template establishes the radius, while its stops or edge guides establish where the curve sits on the board. A smooth template and repeatable registration help produce matching corners across multiple pieces. If the template shifts, the bearing cannot reliably follow the intended curve; clamp the setup firmly and keep the router base supported throughout the pass.
