Make a classic wobble duck pull toy from ¾-inch hardwood, wooden wheels, a dowel axle and a pull string. The build follows Make’s Mr. Quackers template: cut and shape the body, make or buy wheel stock, assemble the wheels with room to rotate, then add the string. Make estimates 1–3 hours and rates the project moderate; actual time depends on your tools and experience. See Make’s project and template.
Materials and tools
Gather the following before starting. Maple is the example hardwood, but Make allows wood of your choice.
Materials
- ¾-inch hardwood for the duck body
- 1¼–1½-inch wooden dowel stock for the wheels, or suitable stock to turn to that diameter
- ¼-inch dowel for the axle; the project author used oak
- Pull string; the author used jute
- Spray adhesive to attach the paper template; the author used Super 77
Tools
- Bandsaw
- Lathe and roughing and spindle gouges, only if turning your own wheel stock
- Sander
- Drill or drill press with ¼-inch and ⅜-inch bits
- Chop saw or table saw for cutting the wheels
- Hold-down clamps for the wheel-cutting setup
Choose how to make the wheels
| Approach | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Buy 1¼–1½-inch dowel stock | Drill a ¼-inch hole through the stock, square the ends, then cut the angled wheel pieces. | Skip the lathe and turning step. |
| Turn wheel stock | Use a lathe to bring a short section of wood to 1¼–1½ inches in diameter, then drill and cut the wheels. | Use this route if you have a lathe and want to make the stock yourself. |
Make does not compare cost or brands for these options. Either route leads to the same wheel geometry.
Cut and shape the duck body
- Print the template at its original size. Use Make’s attached Mr. Quackers template without scaling so the pattern retains its intended dimensions.
- Attach it to the hardwood. Spray adhesive on the back of the paper and press it onto the wood. Wear a mask while spraying, as the project instructions advise.
- Cut out the profile. Follow the outline with a bandsaw. Smooth the cut edge with a sander and hand-sand carefully around the beak.
- Drill the axle hole. At the location shown on the template, drill a ⅜-inch hole through the body. A hand drill is an option if you do not have a drill press.
- Finish the edges. Sand up to 220 grit; finer sanding is optional. Soften the body edges so they are not sharp.
Make the two angled wheels
- Prepare the wheel stock. Use 1¼–1½-inch dowel, or turn a short section to that diameter on a lathe. The author notes that buying dowel for the wheels lets you skip turning.
- Drill the axle passage. Drill a ¼-inch hole lengthwise through the wheel stock.
- Square the stock ends. Trim the ends so the wheel pieces can be cut consistently.
- Set up the angled cuts. Set the saw blade to 10°. Make two wheel pieces, aiming for about 1½ inches per piece. The project describes using a zero-clearance fence and support material; use hold-down clamps during these operations.
- Check the opposing angles. In the assembled toy, the 10° faces should point in opposite directions. Optional turning can tidy the angled faces.
Assemble the axle and wheels
- Cut a length of ¼-inch dowel for the axle and round one end.
- Press the rounded end into one wheel.
- Pass the axle through the body’s ⅜-inch hole.
- Press the second wheel onto the axle, orienting its angled face opposite the first wheel’s angled face.
- Leave side clearance so the wheels can rotate without rubbing the body or binding. Glue is optional for the wheel-to-axle fit; the author reports that a press fit held in his build.
Attach the pull string and inspect the toy
Tie the pull string around the duck’s neck. Roll the toy by hand and check that both wheels turn freely, remain seated on the axle and clear the body. Correct any binding by adjusting the wheel spacing before using the toy.
