Turn a clean food can into a decorative solar lantern by fitting it with the intact electronics assembly from a small solar garden light. Make and finish the holes first; then mount the donor light’s panel, battery, LED and control parts without altering their wiring. The result is best treated as an ambient accent light, not dependable task, emergency or security lighting.
Materials and tools
- A clean, dry food can with an opening large enough to fit the donor light. Check for sharp edges.
- A small solar garden stake or path light. Keep its original panel, rechargeable battery, LED and control/charging electronics together.
- An awl or ice pick and hammer for a punched design, or a drill and suitable bits for decorative, drainage or hanging holes.
- Optional wire or sturdy twine if you plan to hang the lantern.
- Optional paint or other decoration, plus adhesive or sealant compatible with the actual materials and outdoor exposure.
- Eye protection, hand protection and a stable work surface for working with sheet metal.
The project guide’s approach is to reuse a small solar garden light as the donor assembly rather than specify a circuit to build from separate parts (Outward Lab’s tin-can solar-light guide). A university activity shows the typical path-light components, but products differ in their wiring and battery chemistry (University of Illinois Community Resilience through Engineering Design).
Make the lantern

Prepare the can
Remove the label, wash the can and let it dry. Inspect the opening and rim, and smooth any sharp edges before handling it further. Paint or decorate the can now, then let the finish dry completely before fitting the electronics.

Plan and make the light pattern
Draw a simple pattern on the can. For a punched pattern, one tutorial supports the can wall by filling the can with water and freezing it, then making holes with an awl or ice pick and hammer (Instructables’ LED Tin Can Lantern). This is one method, not a requirement: handle the frozen can carefully, keep it stable, and protect your eyes and hands. Drilling can produce more uniform holes, but requires control to keep the bit from slipping.

Drill drainage and, if needed, handle holes
Drill small holes in the base so water can drain rather than collect inside. If the lantern will hang, make two opposite holes near the upper rim for a handle. Smooth or deburr every cut edge before installing the light. The project guide recommends drainage and mounting holes but does not provide a handle load rating (Outward Lab).

Open the donor light without disturbing its circuit
Before removing parts, note how the panel, battery holder, LED, sensor or control board and wires sit in the original light. Keep the matched assembly together where possible. Solar garden lights are not all wired alike, so do not rely on generic wire colors or substitute a different battery chemistry. Mount the panel and light components
Place the donor panel on the can’s top or lid where its receiving surface can get daylight, and secure it without covering that surface. A compatible seal around the joint may help reduce moisture entry, but sealing one joint does not make the modified lantern waterproof. Secure the LED so it shines through the pattern or opening, and position the battery and control parts so they cannot shift or snag. Do not cover contacts or change the donor circuit.

Charge and test after dark
Set the lantern where the panel receives daylight and leave it to charge for several hours, as the project guide directs. Check after dark that the LED comes on. If it does not, check the donor light’s switch and instructions, the panel’s daylight exposure and the original connections before considering any electrical changes. The cited instructions do not establish a specific runtime.

How the solar light works
The panel collects energy in daylight, the rechargeable battery stores it, and the light’s electronics control the LED as ambient light falls. The University of Illinois path-light activity identifies the panel, battery holder, circuit board and wiring as parts of a donor light; the exact circuit and battery type depend on the product (University of Illinois activity).

Choose a pattern and placement

Safety and outdoor use
- Sheet-metal edges and fresh holes can cut. Smooth the rim and burrs, stabilize the can, and use appropriate eye protection while punching or drilling.
- Drainage holes help prevent standing water, but the modified craft has no established waterproof rating. Consider how rain can enter, and do not assume a panel seal makes the whole lantern weatherproof.
- Do not bypass the donor circuit or casually change its rechargeable battery. Different battery chemistries require suitable charging arrangements; preserve the matched components and follow the light manufacturer’s instructions.
