A historical account describes making one by boring holes in a bone handle, inserting animal bristles and securing them with glue. That explains the basic construction idea, but it is not a modern, safety-tested recipe: no reviewed source establishes a home-build method that produces a toothbrush proven safe and effective for routine oral care.
What makes up a toothbrush?
The Japanese Society of Oral Care-associated Manual for Oral Care describes three functional sections:
- Handle: the part held during brushing.
- Neck: the connecting section between handle and head.
- Head: the part that carries the bristle tufts.
Making a brush from scratch therefore means more than shaping a handle. The head must hold bristles securely, and the finished bristle ends and all other components must be suitable for contact with the mouth.
How were bristles attached historically?
A historical construction account describes a bone handle with holes bored into its head. Animal bristles were inserted into the holes and fixed with glue. The principle is easy to understand: make openings in a head, group the fibers into tufts, and secure them so they stay in place.

This is a description of an older construction method, not an endorsement or a modern build guide. It does not establish that bone, animal bristles, a particular glue or a handmade tuft is safe for oral use, nor does it show that the resulting brush cleans effectively.
What are toothbrush bristles made of?
The oral-care manual contrasts nylon with natural swine bristles. Its descriptions help explain why fiber choice matters, but they do not establish that arbitrary filament or handmade tufts are appropriate for brushing.

The manual also notes round-cut and tapered bristle ends. An endpoint’s shape alone does not show that it is smooth or safe: the American Dental Association (ADA) says its manual-toothbrush Seal criteria include bristles without sharp or jagged edges or endpoints.
Why a homemade prototype is not automatically suitable for brushing
A brush can look complete and still fail in ways that matter in the mouth. The ADA’s Seal criteria for manual toothbrushes include safe components, bristles free of sharp or jagged edges, a durable handle material and bristles that remain attached during normal use. These are useful design considerations, but a home-built item cannot be assumed to meet them without appropriate evaluation.

- Tuft retention: bristles must stay attached in normal use; merely inserting fibers into holes does not demonstrate that they will.
- Finished ends: bristle tips must not be sharp or jagged.
- Material suitability: materials need to be safe for use in the mouth.
- Handle durability: the handle must withstand normal brushing.
- Brushing performance: a brush-like appearance does not establish safe or effective cleaning.
Searching for “nylon toothbrush bristle filament” may turn up materials for a craft prototype. A product listing does not establish a filament’s softness, the quality of its finished ends, whether it is suitable for oral contact, or how reliably a handmade head will retain it.

The ADA recommends a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure. Its “Toothbrushes” guidance, last updated August 2026, states: “The consensus recommendation is for people to brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day with a toothbrush that has soft bristles.” The guidance recommends brushing with fluoride toothpaste, covering inner, outer and chewing surfaces, and replacing a toothbrush about every three to four months or earlier if its bristles are matted or frayed. Rinse the brush after use, store it upright and let it air-dry.

Those recommendations describe routine oral-care practice; they do not certify a handmade brush. A scratch-built version is best treated as a historical or craft demonstration rather than a substitute for a conventional toothbrush unless its safety and effectiveness have been established.
