Newspaper can suppress weeds by blocking the light they need to grow. Lay ordinary, non-glossy sheets over the soil with overlapping edges, wet them, then cover them with organic mulch. Use a targeted layer between rows in an established garden; to smother lawn before making a new bed, cover the whole area and allow several months for the vegetation underneath to die.
Choose the right approach for your garden
Newspaper is a temporary sheet mulch, not a permanent weed barrier. It works only where it blocks light, so uncovered seams and edges can leave openings for weeds. The amount of paper and the waiting time depend on whether you are protecting an existing bed or converting lawn.
| Use | Paper and coverage | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Between rows in an existing vegetable garden | Iowa State Extension suggests 2–4 sheets between rows. Overlap edges and keep paper clear of plant stems and crowns. | Targeted weed suppression; check periodically and renew the surface mulch as needed. |
| Converting lawn into a garden bed | Use a continuous layer with generous overlaps. Penn State Extension recommends about 10 sheets, 8–10 inches of overlap, and a total 4–6 inches of mulch over the paper. | Allow several months for the covered vegetation to die before planting; timing varies with conditions. |
These are extension recommendations for particular uses, not a single sheet count that fits every garden. For general sheet mulching, Iowa State Extension describes 2–3 layers, with up to 10 where needed; more paper is not automatically better because an overly thick barrier can restrict air and water movement.
How to use newspaper between garden rows
- Prepare the area. Cut down or remove existing weeds where practical. Leave space around established plant stems and crowns so the paper and cover mulch do not smother them.
- Lay paper over exposed soil. Use 2–4 sheets between rows, as Iowa State Extension recommends for a vegetable garden. Overlap the edges so light cannot pass through open seams.
- Wet the sheets. Water until the paper lies flat against the soil. This helps hold it in place and makes it less likely to blow away.
- Cover with organic mulch. Add wood mulch or compost over the paper to weigh it down. Keep the cover clear of plant stems and crowns.
- Check the bed. Replenish the surface mulch as needed. If the paper is still acting as a barrier after the vegetation beneath it has died and water or air movement seems restricted, loosen or break up the sheet material.
Iowa State Extension’s guidance on newspaper in a vegetable garden and using mulch in the garden supports this targeted approach.

How to smother lawn before making a bed
- Cut down the existing vegetation. Mow or otherwise reduce the lawn before covering it.
- Cover the whole area. Lay newspaper in a continuous layer, overlapping adjacent sections by 8–10 inches so no lawn shows through. Penn State Extension’s method uses about 10 sheets; Iowa State’s grass-removal guidance describes 6–8 sheets. Follow the selected method and make sure the barrier is complete rather than adding thickness without a reason.
- Wet the paper thoroughly. Water it so the sheets settle against the ground. University of Vermont Extension advises wetting the material periodically as it rests.
- Add the mulch cover. Penn State Extension recommends a total of 4–6 inches of mulch over the paper. This cover anchors the sheets and provides a conventional mulch layer.
- Let the bed rest. Wait several months before planting into the converted area. Penn State says four to six months is usually sufficient, while Iowa State advises that complete kill takes several months and suggests starting in fall for spring planting. The actual time depends on the bed and conditions, so check whether the vegetation has died rather than relying on a guaranteed calendar date.

What kind of newspaper is suitable?
Use ordinary, non-glossy newspaper. Iowa State Extension advises against glossy paper such as magazine pages. A May 27, 2026, Ask Extension response attributed to a Multnomah County, Oregon expert says lead is no longer used in black-and-white newspaper sheets and cautions that glossy colored paper may contain heavy metals. That response is not an independent analysis of every newspaper or ink formulation, so it should not be read as a blanket guarantee about all printed paper.

Common mistakes that weaken weed control
- Leaving gaps. Light reaching soil through a seam or uncovered edge weakens the barrier. Overlap sheets and cover the entire intended area.
- Using too much paper. A very thick stack can impede air and water movement. Aim for a complete light-blocking layer suited to the job, not the largest possible sheet count.
- Skipping the wetting or mulch cover. Dry sheets can shift or blow away. Wet them and add organic mulch to hold them in place.
- Expecting permanent control. Newspaper decomposes. Weeds may return after it breaks down or grow through uncovered areas, so inspect the bed and maintain its surface mulch.
- Covering plant crowns and stems. Keep paper and mulch away from established plants rather than treating the whole bed as bare ground.
