To drive a nail by hand, use a sound claw hammer, choose a nail suited to the wood and task, and begin with light taps. Once the nail stands upright, move your fingers away and strike its head squarely with controlled blows. Wear eye protection, secure the workpiece, and practice on scrap wood before working on a finished piece.
Choose a hammer and nail for the job
Use a claw hammer for ordinary nails
A claw hammer has a striking face for driving nails and a curved claw for pulling them. Choose one that feels controllable in your hand, with a secure head and an undamaged handle. A cushioned handle may make gripping more comfortable and reduce vibration, but no single hammer weight is right for every person or task. See CCOHS guidance on hammers.
Match the nail to the wood
There is no universal nail size for every repair. Consider the wood’s thickness, the joint, and the nail’s intended purpose. An oversized nail, thin stock, or a nail placed too close to a board’s end can split the wood. In hard wood, or where splitting is a concern, a pilot hole may help. Practice on scrap of similar material before nailing a finished board. The University of Missouri Extension guide to working with wood and tools discusses these cautions.
Prepare safely before you swing
- Set the workpiece on a stable surface and secure it so it cannot shift.
- Put on safety glasses or goggles.
- Check that the hammer head is tight and the hammer is not damaged. Set a loose-headed or damaged hammer aside.
- Clear the swing path and make sure other people are out of the striking area.
- Keep your attention on the nail and the hammer’s striking point.

Drive the nail without bending it or hitting your fingers
- Place the point. Position the nail where it belongs, perpendicular to the wood if the job calls for a straight drive.
- Start with light taps. Hold the nail near its top and tap gently until it stands upright on its own. Keep your fingers out of the hammer’s path. Do not have another person hold the nail while you strike.
- Move your hand away. Once the nail is set upright, remove the supporting hand. The University of Hawaiʻi’s woodworking training material likewise advises removing the free hand after setting the nail.
- Strike squarely. Focus on the nail head and use the center of the hammer face. Controlled, square blows help keep the nail straight and reduce marks on the wood.
- Stop at the intended depth. For an ordinary exposed head, stop when it reaches the desired position. If the head must sit flush with or below the surface, finish with a nail set.
If the nail starts to bend, stop and correct the setup rather than striking harder. Check whether the nail is leaning or the hammer is contacting it off-center; straighten or replace the nail as appropriate before continuing.
Set a nail head below the surface
A nail set is a small finishing tool, not a substitute for a hammer: the hammer drives and pulls nails, while the nail set lets you recess a head without repeatedly striking the wood around it. Choose a nail set tip smaller than the nail head, place it directly on the head, and tap gently until the head is at the desired depth. See the University of Missouri Extension guide.

Pull a nail with the claw
- Position the claw under the nail head.
- Pull steadily, keeping the hammer controlled and the workpiece supported.
- For a long nail that needs more leverage, place a small wood block under the hammer head. It can improve leverage while helping protect the board’s surface.
Do not jerk the hammer or let the board shift as the nail comes free. The claw is designed for nail removal; a nail set is not.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Holding the nail during full swings: Use only light taps to start it, then remove your hand as soon as it stands upright.
- Hitting at an angle or off-center: Pause, realign the nail if possible, and aim for square contact with the center of the hammer face.
- Striking harder when the nail bends: Stop and fix the alignment or choose a more suitable nail; extra force can worsen the bend or damage the wood.
- Splitting a board: Reconsider nail size and placement, especially near the end of thin stock. A pilot hole may help in hard wood.
- Using a loose or damaged hammer: Remove it from use rather than trying to compensate for an unreliable tool.
- Using the claw hammer on hardened tools: Keep a claw hammer to its intended nail-driving and nail-pulling work. The Atal Tinkering Lab manual describes other hammer types for different tasks.
Practice and know when this guide is not enough
Practice starting, driving, and pulling different nail lengths in scrap wood before working on a visible surface. The right nail and finish depend on the wood species, thickness, joint, and intended use. For structural or load-bearing work, follow the project’s plans and fastening specifications rather than relying on beginner guidance.
