Use a large pot with drainage holes, a suitable growing medium and gentle watering; then follow the seed supplier’s species-specific directions where they differ.
Choose a pot, position and growing medium
Use a roomy container with drainage
Choose a pot large enough for roots to develop and make sure it has holes in the bottom. A container that holds water can leave the growing medium waterlogged. Fill the pot with topsoil or peat-free compost, leaving space below the rim so you can water without washing seed over the edge. Kew’s Grow Wild guide recommends a large container and a sunny position.
Match the plants to the pot and site
“Wildflower mix” does not describe one uniform type of plant. Species differ in mature height and growth habit, so check whether the plants will suit the pot’s size and the amount of sun and moisture available. The RHS container wildflower list is one reference for species suited to pots.
Select seed native to your area
Choose seed that is appropriate to your local region; “native” is geographically specific, not a universal label. The Natural History Museum recommends British readers choose mixes from suppliers specializing in native British wildflowers for its pollinator-pot project. Outside Britain, look for seed native to your own area instead.

Before buying a mix or individual species, check four things:
- Whether the plants are native to your area.
- Whether their light and moisture needs match the pot’s position.
- Whether their mature height and spread suit the container.
- Whether the mix is intended for the kind of display or wildlife purpose you want.
There is no single best mix established for every location and pot. Follow the seed packet when it gives instructions for the particular species, as sowing and care can vary by region and plant.

When to sow
Timing depends on location and species. The Natural History Museum recommends spring or autumn for its British project; that is not a worldwide sowing calendar. Use local guidance or the seed packet to choose a suitable time for your area.
How to sow wildflower seed in a pot
- Prepare the pot. Confirm the drainage holes are open, place it in a sunny position if that suits the selected species, and add topsoil or peat-free compost. Leave room at the rim for watering.
- Sow over the surface. Scatter the seed across the growing medium. Kew’s guide says to cover it with only a very thin layer, about 1 mm. California native seed guidance from UC ANR says seeds should be barely covered because they need light to germinate.
- Water gently. Moisten the medium without washing seed away or leaving it soggy.
- Label the pot. Note what you sowed and the sowing date.
Kew says seedlings may start to appear within a couple of weeks, depending on the time of year. This is an approximate guide, not a guaranteed germination schedule; species, season and local conditions matter.

Keep the medium moist, not waterlogged
Water gently enough to avoid dislodging seed, and aim to keep the growing medium moist without saturating it. Good drainage matters throughout: the Natural History Museum also warns against waterlogging. If water is not draining freely, check that the pot holes are clear and that the container is not sitting in standing water.
