A ha-ha is a sunken boundary—typically a ditch with a retaining wall on the garden side and a sloped outer bank. It keeps livestock or other grazing animals out of a garden while making the boundary difficult to see from the garden, preserving an open view across the surrounding landscape.
How a ha-ha works
A ha-ha uses a change in ground level to create a real physical barrier without putting a conventional fence or wall across the view. On the garden side, a wall or steep face holds back the earth; beyond it, the ditch slopes up gradually to meet the higher ground. The garden lawn can therefore appear to continue into pasture or parkland, even though the two areas are separated.
Historic descriptions also call the feature a “sunk fence,” a “foss,” or a “ditch and fence.” The exact construction varies by site, but the defining idea is the concealed, sunken boundary. The National Trust explains the form and its purpose in its history of the ha-ha.
Why is it called a ha-ha?
The name is traditionally explained as a surprised exclamation: someone approaching the boundary discovers it only when it interrupts their path. The National Trust attributes this explanation to French writer Dezallier d’Argenville and his English translator, John James, who described a concealed ditch and wall that would surprise the eye and prompt an “Ah! Ah!” The explanation is a historical account of the name, not a definitively established linguistic origin. See the National Trust’s discussion of the name and its early descriptions.

How ha-has became a feature of landscape gardens
Ha-has became closely associated with eighteenth-century landscape gardens, where an unobstructed view was part of the design. The National Trust says d’Argenville described the feature in print in his 1709 gardening treatise, La Theorie et la Practique du Jardinage. The National Gallery of Art’s landscape-garden reference records John James’s English translation in 1712. In this setting, a sunken boundary could divide a formal garden from pasture or wider parkland while making the designed grounds seem to flow into the countryside.
Stowe: influential, but not an uncontested “first”
Stowe in Buckinghamshire is an important English example. The county’s heritage record dates its first ha-ha to 1719 and notes that it was later extended and altered. The National Trust describes work at Stowe in the 1720s as among the early examples that drew attention and imitation.

It is more accurate to call Stowe an early and influential example than to say it was unquestionably the first ha-ha. In a 2006 scholarly study, Kenji Wako notes that ha-has existed elsewhere before the work associated with Charles Bridgeman at Stowe. Wako also explains that Stowe’s original wall or hedge was visible; the familiar, unobstructed effect came later, when above-ground features were removed as the landscape was remodelled.
A letter from John Perceval, 1st Earl of Egmont, to his cousin Daniel Dering in 1724 captures the effect at Stowe. As reproduced by the National Trust, Egmont wrote that the garden was “not bounded by walls, but by a ha-hah [sic],” which left the visitor a view of the surrounding wooded country.

Examples at other historic gardens
- Wrest Park: Historic England records a ha-ha approximately 400 metres long, with a ditch on its eastern side. The listing describes it as separating the designed garden from wider parkland and keeping wildlife out of the pleasure gardens.
- Petworth: The National Trust also documents a ha-ha at Petworth, illustrating how the feature appears in more than one historic landscape.

The comparison is about landscape effect, not a claim that every ha-ha or fence performs identically. A ha-ha remains a physical obstacle, and its suitability depends on the site and the job it needs to do.
