To make a custom welcome mat, paint a design onto a plain coir doormat using a stencil or painter’s tape. Plan the design first, protect your work surface, apply paint carefully to the coarse fibers, and let the mat dry completely before putting it outside.
What you’ll need
- A plain coir doormat
- Acrylic, latex, or exterior paint suited to your chosen project method
- A paintbrush, stiff-bristle brush, or dabber brush
- A protected work surface, such as newspaper, plastic, or a drop cloth
Optional supplies include a letter stencil or stencil blank, painter’s tape, a pencil or marker, and heavy-duty scissors if you want to change the mat’s outline. To make a stencil, use poster board or vinyl and cut it with scissors or a craft knife.
Choose a design and application method
Decide whether you want lettering, a motif, or a simple geometric pattern. Sketch the layout on paper before painting so you can check the spacing and placement.

How to paint the mat
- Prepare the mat. Keep its original shape or trim a simple outline with heavy-duty scissors. Set it on newspaper, plastic, or a drop cloth to protect the surface beneath it.
- Mask and position the design. Apply painter’s tape or place your stencil where you want the design. Press it down securely, especially around the edges, while taking care not to shift the coir fibers.
- Apply paint carefully. Use a dabber or stiff-bristle brush. For a stencil, press the paint on with an up-and-down motion rather than brushing sideways, which can catch and move the fibers. Coir is absorbent, so it may need more paint than a smooth surface.
- Check coverage. Let the paint dry, then inspect the design for missed areas. Touch up as needed, taking care not to pull the stencil or tape across the fibers.
- Let the mat dry fully. Wait until the paint is completely dry before using the mat. Coir.com recommends at least 24 hours for the methods it describes; follow your paint’s label too, since drying time varies by paint and application.
What to expect outdoors
The cited tutorials describe different paint choices and techniques, but they do not compare performance under controlled outdoor conditions. They do not establish a guaranteed lifespan, universal weather resistance, or whether a sealer is necessary or sufficient. Choose paint for your intended use and follow its label, but treat the finished mat’s outdoor durability as uncertain.
