What the CNC stand-up paddleboard project is
Sonny Lacey’s Make: project describes a 10 ft 5 in longboard SUP intended to serve as both a paddle craft and a wave-rider. Its CNC-cut structure is a hollow “rib and spine” skeleton. Wood planking and composite layers complete the board; CNC machining is one stage of a hands-on woodworking and fiberglass project, not a way to produce a finished board in one operation. Materials, tools, and preparation
The guide’s bill of materials spans the frame, outer shell, rails, and finish. Plan the whole build before cutting: the CNC stage depends on suitable equipment and the remaining steps require woodworking, foam shaping, and epoxy/fiberglass work.
- Frame and fin: plywood.
- Planking: wood strips, about 64 sq ft per the project guide.
- Rails and ends: extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam for the rails, plus wood blocks at the nose and tail.
- Bonding and sealing: waterproof wood glue, construction adhesive, epoxy, and fiberglass cloth.
- Hardware and finish: a surfboard vent plug with leash attachment and spar varnish.
- Digital fabrication: an application for viewing or editing SVG files and software that generates G-code for the CNC router.
The guide assumes the builder knows how to operate a CNC machine safely. Its files are arranged for a 4 ft by 8 ft sheet, but the parts can be rearranged for smaller routers. Check your machine’s work area, material thickness, cutter, and software workflow before generating toolpaths; the files do not remove the need to verify a setup and operate the router safely.

How the build progresses
- Prepare stock and tools. Gather the plywood, planking, foam, adhesives, composite materials, hardware, and finish. Set up the SVG-to-G-code workflow for the CNC router.
- Cut the skeleton. Use the provided SVG files to generate G-code and cut the plywood spine and ribs. The project’s 4 ft by 8 ft layout can be rearranged for a smaller machine.
- Assemble the frame. Fit the ribs to the spine and check alignment before covering the structure.
- Plank the board. Attach the wood strips over the frame to form the deck and hull surfaces.
- Shape the rails. Cut and shape XPS foam for the board’s edges, then bond it in place.
- Seal and reinforce. Apply epoxy to seal the board. The guide describes fiberglass on the rails as necessary for strength and fiberglass on the deck and bottom as an option for added abrasion resistance.
- Make and install the fin. The project uses plywood for the fin; build and fit it as directed in the guide.
- Finish the surface. The author notes that epoxy is not UV-stable and describes applying spar varnish over it as a protective finish.
Safety and on-water use
The project author advises wearing gloves when working with epoxy and using a cartridge-type respirator around wood dust and when cutting foam. Follow the labels and safety information for the specific epoxy, adhesives, and finishing products you use, and use suitable dust control and ventilation. These are the author’s cautions, not a safety certification of the design or finished board.
For water use, the guide advises getting instruction, wearing a life-preserving device, and considering wind, weather, and a safe route to land. A completed DIY board should not be assumed to have independent performance testing or certification; the project materials do not establish either.

DIY construction versus commercial CNC-shaped boards
“CNC” describes a fabrication method, not a standard board shape or performance class. Commercial CNC-shaped boards use different designs and materials, so they are alternatives to compare by fit and construction—not proof of how the Make: build will perform.

How to choose between building and buying
Start with how and where the board will be used, then compare the dimensions and construction that support that use. A longboard SUP project and a narrow racing board do not become comparable just because both involve CNC machining.

- Use and conditions: distinguish recreational paddling, surf-oriented use, racing, and longer-distance flatwater training.
- Fit and handling: compare length, width, volume or recommended capacity, and the manufacturer’s intended rider/use case. Wider and thicker recreational shapes are generally associated with lift, buoyancy, and stability; narrower and thinner performance shapes are associated with speed and carving control. These are broad design relationships, not a guarantee about a particular board.
- Construction and weight: compare wood, foam core, carbon, fiberglass, and the finished board’s stated weight. Do not infer the DIY board’s weight from a commercial model.
- Fin and package: check fin configuration, included accessories, warranty, and what is actually included in the quoted price.
- Total cost and effort: for the build, account for materials, CNC access, tools, and time beyond the project page’s estimate. For a purchase, confirm the current price, stock, dimensions, and terms directly with the manufacturer.
Board shape is specific to the discipline and rider. CompositesWorld’s 2017 manufacturing feature notes that dimensions and materials are adapted to intended use, and describes a racing board developed with NSP and manufactured by Cobra.
