OpenPipes is an open-source project for building a virtual pipe organ (VPO) workstation: organ software, MIDI and electronics designs, and plans for a custom console. Despite the phrase “DIY pipe organ,” the project materials describe a computer-based instrument that plays sampled organ sounds—not a kit for building acoustic pipes.
What OpenPipes includes
OpenPipes brings together software, controller hardware and console fabrication resources. The project describes its software and designs on its project site and its GitHub profile.
Software for playing sampled organs
OpenPipes presents Masterpiece as a cross-platform sample player for Hauptwerk and GrandOrgue sample sets. The project says it can derive a console layout from a sample-set definition and lists standalone and plugin formats. Those are the project’s descriptions, not independent compatibility tests. Its Masterpiece feature page also describes MIDI mapping and routing, voicing, recording, combination sets and convolution reverb.
Computer and operating-system options
The project describes its organ-focused Linux software as available for Raspberry Pi and standard x86 PCs. Its GitHub profile identifies Pipebian64 support for Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5. These references identify project targets, but they do not provide a complete current minimum specification for every sample set and setup. A Raspberry Pi 5 is therefore one possible computer component to investigate—not a complete organ system or a guaranteed match for a particular build.

Controls, electronics and console plans
OpenPipes describes PIPE 2C as a chainable I2C ecosystem for controls such as stops, pistons, draw knobs, pedals and sensors. Its GitHub profile also lists Arduino-compatible MIDI controller boards and console peripherals. For the physical console, the project lists designs ranging from portative instruments to three-manual scale, along with cut lists, CAD resources and pedalboard materials.
What a practical build involves
A supported computer is only one part of a usable workstation. Depending on the chosen design, a builder may need keyboards or other input controls, suitable audio output, controller electronics, console materials and the tools and skills to fabricate an enclosure. The project’s public materials do not establish one universal component list, total build cost, latency figure or compatibility guarantee. Check the current documentation against the exact sample set, computer, controls and console layout you intend to use.

OpenPipes provides software and design resources, but that does not make physical components or materials free. Its support page separately advertises a paid book, Building Open Source Virtual Pipe Organs, described as covering the build process in more than 150 pages. The page does not establish an affiliate arrangement.
How to choose a build path
The project documents several ways to approach a workstation, but does not publish an apples-to-apples comparison of cost, complexity or performance. Use the choices below to define a build, then confirm compatibility and requirements in the current project documentation.

| Decision | Options described | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Computer platform | Raspberry Pi or standard x86 PC; Pipebian64 lists Raspberry Pi 4 B and Raspberry Pi 5 targets. | Requirements for the chosen sample set, software and audio setup. |
| Console scale | Portative through two- or three-manual designs and related console resources. | Available space, desired manuals and pedalboard, and the materials and fabrication work involved. |
| Input controls | Existing MIDI controls or OpenPipes controller hardware and peripherals. | Whether the controls and electronics work together with the intended software and layout. |
| Physical construction | A software-first setup or a custom wood console. | How much fabrication you want to undertake and what controls and enclosure the setup requires. |
What the project’s performance claims mean
OpenPipes’ homepage says Masterpiece can use “up to 9.3x less memory” than holding every sample resident, and claims a 44-stop organ fits on a Raspberry Pi. These are project statements on its undated homepage, accessed in 2026; the reviewed page does not provide independent testing methodology or conditions. Treat them as claims to evaluate for a specific configuration, not as performance guarantees for all sample sets or Raspberry Pi systems.
How this differs from building an acoustic pipe organ
A virtual organ uses computer software and sampled sound; an acoustic pipe organ produces sound through physical pipes and the systems that supply and control them. The American Institute of Organbuilders’ Guidelines for Fine Organbuilding address the distinct craft requirements of conventional organbuilding, including wind systems, pipes, tuning, voicing, access and installation. OpenPipes’ described scope is the virtual workstation and its console—not the construction of a complete set of sounding pipes.

Who OpenPipes may suit
The project may interest organists who want a customizable virtual instrument, makers who enjoy electronics and woodworking, and technically inclined builders assembling a purpose-built workstation. Its open hardware, CAD and woodworking resources provide starting points for customization, but the reviewed project pages do not establish that building one is effortless for beginners or specify a complete budget.
OpenPipes describes its mission as working “To democratize access to the once-exclusive, closed-source, and prohibitively expensive pipe organ through open-source hardware and software.” That is the project’s stated vision, not a claim about the cost or difficulty of any particular build; its about page does not attribute that wording to an individual speaker.
