Bell estimated that the I-95 section between mile markers 22 and 39 could be finished in late 2027, while work through Lumberton is expected to continue until 2029. Those dates are estimates shared at the meeting, not independently confirmed schedules.

Major construction and schedule estimates
I-95 widening
Bell said some four-lane sections in northern Robeson County were complete. He described the stretch from mile marker 22 to mile marker 39 as progressing faster than the section through Lumberton, estimating completion in late 2027 for the former. Work through Lumberton was expected to continue until 2029. Bell said the finished highway is expected to have more of an urban-area design.
U.S. 74 interchange work
Construction at the U.S. 74/N.C. 130/N.C. 72 interchange was in the punch-list phase, according to Bell. The work is part of bringing U.S. 74 up to interstate specifications.

Bell described an upcoming conversion of N.C. 72 from four lanes to three, intended to improve bicycle and pedestrian access. He did not give a start date in the meeting account.
Resurfacing and maintenance across the county
Bell reported nine active resurfacing contracts covering close to 120 miles. He said NCDOT expected close to 100 additional miles to be resurfaced before the end of calendar year 2026. Those are figures from the presentation as reported by The Robesonian, not an independently audited tally.

Bell also described the maintenance workload and staffing. He said the roadway maintenance department had 44 employees, compared with 120 formerly. Over the prior year, crews had patched more than 2,600 potholes, addressed over 58,000 feet of ditches, installed 3,000 feet of residential driveway pipes, and installed 6,500 feet of cross lines beneath roadways. The report attributes these figures to Bell’s presentation.
According to Bell, NCDOT requires potholes to be fixed within 48 hours after a report and usually completes repairs within 24 hours. Commissioner Faline Dial encouraged residents to report road-maintenance problems through NCDOT’s online system; the meeting report did not provide its address.

Safety figures and measures discussed
Bell cited 66 roadway fatalities in Robeson County in 2022 and 24 to date in 2026. The latter was a year-to-date figure at the Oct. 5 meeting, not a full-year total. He pointed to all-way stops, roundabouts and local law enforcement as elements of the county’s safety effort. The figures do not establish that any one measure caused fatalities to change.
What the investment figures mean
Bell characterized NCDOT’s overall investment as about $10 billion and its investment in Robeson County as about $1.4 billion, or close to 15% of the overall figure. These amounts and the comparison were reported from his presentation in 2026; the meeting report does not provide a separate breakdown of how the county investment is allocated among projects.
