For a cold climate, a properly fitted freezeless wall faucet is designed to reduce freeze risk by placing its shutoff mechanism inside the wall. It is not freeze-proof: the faucet must be installed so it drains, and you must remove the hose before freezing weather. Woodford Model 17 is one manufacturer-documented option with built-in anti-siphon protection, but its length, inlet, and installation conditions must match your home.
What matters most when choosing an outdoor faucet
“Outdoor faucet,” “sillcock,” “hose bibb,” and “spigot” can describe the wall-mounted fitting used to supply water outside. In freezing regions, focus on how the valve shuts off and drains—not simply on a product being labeled frost-free.
- Freeze protection: A freezeless wall faucet places its shutoff mechanism inside the wall, where it is less exposed to outdoor cold. It must still drain correctly after shutoff.
- Backflow protection: Check whether the exact model includes anti-siphon or backflow protection. Do not assume every outdoor faucet does.
- Fit: Match the faucet’s length and inlet connection to the wall thickness and supply plumbing.
- Operation and installation: Confirm how the model shuts off and what installation conditions it requires. No independent comparison establishes which model is easiest or fastest to install or has the quickest shutoff.
Cold-climate option: Woodford Model 17
Woodford describes its Model 17 freezeless faucet as an anti-siphon wall faucet for residential irrigation in freezing climates. Its integral device provides backflow protection, and the manufacturer identifies the model as listed to ASSE 1019. Those are product-specific features, not a guarantee of compliance with every local plumbing code.
Woodford says the faucet will not burst from freezing when it is correctly installed, shut off, and the hose is detached. That condition is essential: a hose left attached can prevent proper drainage. The manufacturer’s Model 17 product information also says the faucet must pitch downward toward the nozzle.

Model 17 specifications and limits
Woodford’s 2021 catalog sheet gives Model 17 a maximum operating pressure of 125 psi, a maximum water temperature of 120°F, and a limit of 12 hours of continuous water pressure. These are manufacturer specifications for this model, not general limits for outdoor faucets. See the Woodford 2021 catalog and verify current product documentation before purchase.
Compare models by fit and features, not an unproven ranking

Manufacturer product pages and instructions do not provide side-by-side independent installation-time measurements or comparative shutoff testing. “Easy install” and “quick shutoff” are therefore questions to assess against your own plumbing and access, not established winners among these models.

Check the wall, inlet, and supply before ordering
A model name or nominal faucet category does not establish that a faucet will fit. Woodford’s Model 17 catalog shows different inlet configurations and dimensions that depend on wall thickness. Measure the wall and identify the supply connection before choosing the faucet length and inlet.
- Measure the wall where the faucet will pass through, accounting for the manufacturer’s dimensions and installation details.
- Identify the existing supply pipe and connection type; confirm compatibility with the faucet’s available inlet.
- Check that the shutoff end will sit in a heated space, as required by the Model 14/17 installation instructions.
- Confirm that the faucet can be installed with the nozzle down and a slight downward pitch toward the nozzle so water can drain.
- If the connection or access is uncertain, have a qualified plumber assess the installation rather than relying on a product label alone.
Installation and winter operation
The steps below summarize Woodford’s instructions for Models 14 and 17 only; other faucets may have different requirements. Woodford warns: “Wall faucets must be properly installed and operated to insure drainage. Improperly installed or operated wall faucets may freeze and burst in freezing weather.”

- Flush the supply line before connecting the faucet, following the model instructions.
- Prepare an appropriately sized wall opening and insert the faucet through it.
- Orient the faucet for drainage: point the nozzle down and give the tube a slight downward pitch toward it.
- Secure the flange as directed by the manufacturer.
- Keep the supply connection in a heated space. This is a stated requirement in Woodford’s Model 14/17 instructions.
- For a solder connection, open the faucet fully before soldering. Avoid excessive heat, which can damage components.
- Before freezing weather, shut off the faucet and remove the hose. Woodford’s Model 17 information and Watts’ frost-proof sillcock instructions both specify hose removal to allow drainage. See Watts’ frost-proof sillcock installation instructions.

Model 17 includes an integral backflow-protection device, but the available manufacturer information does not establish that it meets every jurisdiction’s plumbing requirements. Check local code and the current listing and specifications for the product you plan to install. Do not treat a feature on one model as a substitute for checking requirements where you live.
