TxDOT is developing plans to widen and reconstruct a two-mile stretch of I-20 in Smith County, from Harvey Road (CR 433) east to US 69. The proposal includes rebuilding ramps near Lindale, but TxDOT describes the work as an I-20 corridor project—not a standalone interchange rebuild. Construction is currently listed to begin in winter 2028, subject to change.

Where the I-20 project will take place

The project covers I-20 from Harvey Road (CR 433) east to US 69, a two-mile segment in Smith County. TxDOT’s Tyler District identifies it as part of the broader I-20 corridor expansion. The published limits do not establish that the entire Lindale interchange is being rebuilt.

TxDOT reports that average daily traffic on the I-20 mainlanes through the project area was 51,020 in 2021. The agency also says about 32% of average daily traffic in the area is truck traffic; its project page does not give a separate measurement year for that share. TxDOT projects average daily traffic to increase by more than 36% from 2027 to 2047. These are figures reported by TxDOT, not independently verified estimates.

What TxDOT proposes to build

The planned work combines mainlane, frontage-road, ramp, bridge and local-road changes:

When construction could begin

TxDOT’s project page lists the following schedule. Every date is subject to change.

Project stage Published timing
Plans, specifications and estimates development Ongoing since fall 2023
Right-of-way acquisitions Ongoing since spring 2024
Utility relocations Beginning summer 2026
Construction Beginning winter 2028

The listed construction start is a forecast, not a guarantee. Planning, right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation are separate stages that precede construction; a schedule entry alone does not mean roadwork has begun.

How to check for schedule and status updates

For the latest project status, check TxDOT’s I-20 Lindale project page and TxDOT Project Tracker. TxDOT says the tracker covers more than 11,000 projects, is updated weekly using data retrieved daily from TxDOT systems, and may reflect changes as projects move through planning, design and construction. The agency cautions that schedules and project data can change, and that funding and regional priorities may affect project status.
