As of the City of Lawrence’s Oct. 2, 2026 update, construction at Clinton Parkway and Wakarusa Drive was expected to resume later the following week; KSHB reported Oct. 9 as the anticipated date. That was a forecast, not confirmation that work restarted. The city said nearby businesses remained open and accessible, with additional signs directing drivers to local access points.

What drivers should know about access

The City of Lawrence said it had installed additional signs to direct drivers to local access points and advised motorists to allow extra time and follow posted traffic control. It also said businesses in the affected area remained open and accessible. Because construction schedules and traffic patterns can change, check the City’s Oct. 2 traffic update and current posted signs before traveling.

KSHB reported that customers used a detour through a residential area south of Clinton Parkway. It also noted access to the shopping area from the South Lawrence Trafficway’s 27th Street exit onto Wakarusa Drive. Follow current traffic controls rather than relying on a route described during an earlier phase of work.

Why the work was delayed

KSHB reported that crews began work at the intersection on Aug. 19, 2026, and stopped the next day after encountering utility issues. KDOT spokesperson Kate Craft said the closure was extended 45 days while the agency adjusted design plans and completed construction. The city’s Oct. 2 notice described a planned restart later the following week; KSHB identified Oct. 9 as the expected date.

What the interruption meant for nearby businesses

Miller Mart owner Sang Lee told KSHB his business was down by “at least half.” That is Lee’s estimate of his own business’s decline, not an independently measured statistic or a figure for all businesses in the area. KSHB also described navigation difficulties for customers of Nails by Holly. The city said the affected businesses remained open and accessible.

How this work fits into the larger project

The intersection work is part of KDOT’s broader South Lawrence Trafficway south project, which includes widening K-10 and work on interchanges. KDOT says the Wakarusa Drive/27th Street crossing will become grade-separated and anticipates completing the south project in late 2028. That longer-term project schedule is distinct from the temporary work and access changes at Clinton Parkway and Wakarusa Drive.
