The U.S. Department of Transportation announced $426 million in FY 2026 INFRA Track 1 awards on October 1, 2026, for 12 highway and freight projects in 12 states. The individual amounts in DOT’s award fact sheets total $426,719,810, which is the precise sum behind the rounded announcement headline. The funding announcement describes planned work and expected benefits; it does not establish that construction is complete or that projected results have occurred.
What the FY 2026 INFRA awards will fund
The awards span new highway capacity, interchange construction, pavement and bridge rehabilitation, tunnel safety work, and local freight access. The table lists each recipient, the amount stated in its fact sheet, and the planned work DOT describes.

Somerset’s $85,133,660 award is the largest individual amount, while Wyoming’s $6,659,000 award is the smallest; award size alone does not rank public benefit because the fact sheets do not provide a common outcome measure for comparing projects.
What INFRA is—and what this award round covers
INFRA, formally the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program, is a competitive U.S. DOT grant program for freight and highway projects considered nationally or regionally significant. The department says its aim is to improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of freight and people moving in rural and urban areas.

Eligible project categories include highway freight projects, highway and bridge projects, qualifying freight rail and port-connected projects, grade crossings, wildlife crossings, certain border projects, and qualifying marine highway corridors. What benefits DOT expects—and what the announcement does not prove
DOT’s fact sheets describe anticipated safety, asset-condition, economic and freight-operation benefits. Depending on the project, the rationale includes replacing deteriorated pavement or structures, relieving freight bottlenecks, and improving access to ports, airports, industrial areas or freight hubs. For Mississippi’s I-55/I-69 corridor, the fact sheet projects savings of over approximately 11 million vehicle-hours of delay. DOT also projects travel-time and vehicle-operating-cost savings for Florida’s I-4 work.

These are projections, not measured results. The announcement and fact sheets establish awarded amounts and planned scope; they do not show completed construction, independently verified congestion reductions, or post-project safety outcomes. Whether the projects ultimately reduce delays or crashes will depend on delivery and conditions after the work is finished.

In its October 1, 2026 release, Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said: “America’s infrastructure is rated a C. Instead of wasting federal dollars on trains to nowhere, President Trump is investing in desperately-needed infrastructure upgrades that will enhance the way people and projects move.” The grade is Duffy’s assertion in the release, not an independently substantiated rating in the cited announcement materials. DOT characterized the awards as addressing congestion bottlenecks, expanding bypass capacity and adding lanes to busy highways.
