Southwire’s more-than-US$2 billion modernisation commitment is a companywide programme, not a data-centre-only budget. One identified project is a more-than-US$256 million expansion in Starkville, Mississippi, which the company says will add manufacturing capacity to meet demand driven by electrification, broader market growth and data centres.
What Southwire has committed to
Southwire says it is investing more than US$2 billion to modernise facilities across its footprint. The company and the Mississippi Development Authority describe the commitment as companywide. Neither announcement provides a full site-by-site breakdown or a time-phased spending plan, so the share assigned to any particular facility or market is not established. Southwire’s August 10, 2026 announcement and the Mississippi Development Authority’s announcement both connect the Starkville project to that broader effort.
The Starkville expansion
Southwire separately announced a corporate investment of more than US$256 million to expand its Starkville operations by approximately 380,000 square feet. The company forecast 128 new jobs. At the October 5, 2026 groundbreaking, project contractor Gray Construction described the employment figure as approximately 130, a rounded estimate rather than a replacement for Southwire’s stated forecast. Mississippi says it is providing assistance through its Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive (MFLEX) programme; the announcement does not disclose the incentive amount.
What the construction project includes
Gray Construction is delivering the expansion through design-build services. The announced scope calls for demolition of two existing structures totalling roughly 40,000 square feet, followed by construction of new manufacturing space that includes a six-storey tower for the extrusion process used to jacket copper wire. Southwire’s existing operations are expected to remain active during construction. Gray’s groundbreaking announcement describes the work.

- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
The facility is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. Gray also says the design includes rainwater collection for grey-water reuse and provisions for future solar opportunities. These are design features and intentions; the announcement does not say that certification has been awarded or that solar panels are installed.
Gray’s project page displays a 14-month operational timeframe, but does not explain the schedule’s start point. The October groundbreaking announcement does not provide a confirmed commissioning date, so the 14-month figure should not be treated as a precise completion date. Gray’s project page provides that timeframe.

How data centres fit into the investment
Southwire identifies the rapid expansion of data centres as one source of demand for additional manufacturing capacity, alongside electrification and wider market growth. Its data-centre product information describes wire and cable solutions, including custom UL-listed QWIK Whip cables assembled in Youngsville, North Carolina, for hyperscale, enterprise and colocation facilities. That establishes the relevance of Southwire products to data-centre power infrastructure, but it does not show that Starkville’s output is reserved for data centres or identify customers for the new capacity. Southwire’s data-centre cable solutions page describes those products.
The six-storey extrusion tower indicates the manufacturing process involved: extrusion is used to apply a jacket to copper wire. The project announcements do not specify the new lines’ output volumes or product specifications, or how production will be allocated among markets.

A separate investment in data-centre technology
Southwire announced a strategic investment in Verdigris Technologies on March 4, 2026. Verdigris focuses on electrical intelligence for AI-scale data-centre infrastructure, capturing high-frequency, circuit-level electrical data with sensors installed inside existing electrical panels. Southwire said the companies were working to integrate the technology into select Southwire offerings. Southwire’s announcement does not disclose the investment size, commercial terms, product launch schedule or current availability of an integrated offer. It also does not connect Verdigris equipment to the Starkville factory.
What remains undisclosed
- How Southwire’s more-than-US$2 billion companywide commitment is divided among facilities or scheduled over time.
- What proportion of Starkville’s future output, if any, will serve data-centre customers.
- Who the new facility’s customers will be, and the project’s production volumes or product specifications.
- A confirmed commissioning date. Gray’s 14-month operational timeframe has no stated schedule baseline.
Southwire’s announcement describes the Starkville expansion as part of a wider response to demand from electrification, market growth and data centres; it does not present the project as a dedicated data-centre factory.
