What work is planned for the Hughes-Adams bridge?
KFDA/NewsChannel 10 reported on October 5, 2026, that the $4.5 million project would replace the bridge deck—the driving surface—and bridge rail, repair concrete, and build shared-use paths leading up to and on the bridge. TxDOT’s stated goals are to improve mobility and safety and extend the bridge’s service life. The scope includes facilities for people walking and cycling as well as improvements to the roadway.
When will the bridge close, and how long is the project expected to last?
The report said the bridge would be closed during construction. It announced a start date of October 6, 2026, but that announcement alone does not confirm that work actually began that day. Completion was expected in summer 2027; that is a forecast, not a guaranteed reopening date.

Where are the detours?
The report said suggested detour signs would be placed near the project, but it did not name detour streets or provide a route map. Drivers should follow posted signs and check current TxDOT or City of Amarillo traffic notices before choosing a route. What is the bridge’s project background?
A September 2023 KFDA report listed the Hughes Adams Street bridge at the BNSF railroad among three Amarillo bridges planned for restoration.
