Turkish officials describe the project as a future launch site for Turkish satellites and launch vehicles, with commercial services also planned. Reports in April and June 2026 said construction was still under way; officials have not announced a completion date or first launch.
What has been announced?
At a joint press conference in Istanbul with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Erdoğan said the project design was complete and construction had begun through the Turkish Space Agency. Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications published the announcement on 30 December 2025. Erdoğan described the planned facility as infrastructure for satellite technologies and launches. The following day, Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır told Anadolu Agency that feasibility and design work were complete and first-phase construction had started. He said the project was being built on land allocated to Türkiye in Somalia under an agreement between the two countries. Anadolu Agency, 31 December 2025
Later reports described work as ongoing: Anadolu Agency reported that Turkish Space Agency chair Yusuf Kıraç said construction was under way on 29 April 2026, and Somalia’s National News Agency reported a project meeting between Somali ambassador Tamer Türk and Kıraç on 9 June 2026. What is the spaceport intended to do?
Turkish officials present the project as part of Türkiye’s National Space Program and its effort to gain independent access to space. Kacır said the facility is intended to support launches of Turkish-developed launch vehicles and satellites, while helping build a domestic launch-technology ecosystem. The planned industrial capabilities described by Kacır include rocket engines, fuel technologies, propulsion systems, advanced materials, avionics and ground-support infrastructure. An Anadolu Agency feature in January outlined a three-phase plan and said Turkish satellites were expected initially to target low Earth orbit and geosynchronous Earth orbit, with international customers envisaged later. Why was Somalia selected?
Kacır cited Somalia’s position near the equator, its coastal location, favorable weather and relatively low air and sea traffic as advantages for launch safety, efficiency and flexibility. Anadolu Agency, 31 December 2025
The equatorial rationale is that Earth’s rotation provides the greatest eastward speed near the equator, which can give a rocket an additional velocity advantage for suitable trajectories. An astrophysicist quoted by Anadolu explained this general principle; the reporting does not provide a comparative engineering assessment of candidate sites or measured performance for the Somali project. The reviewed reports do not identify the site’s Somali region, coordinates or acreage. The minister’s reference to land allocated under bilateral agreement does not establish a more precise location.

Somali officials cited expected opportunities for young people in science, technology, innovation, research and other skilled fields, as well as knowledge transfer, capacity building and economic growth. Kacır has also described potential revenue from launch services, testing and integration for global customers. In April 2026, Kıraç was reported as saying the project had attracted global commercial interest, but no prospective company, signed contract or launch booking was identified. What remains unknown?
Public reporting reviewed for this article does not state the project’s budget, exact site, acreage, workforce, launch capacity, target completion year, launch cadence or first launch date. The project’s three phases are a plan structure, not a published performance measure. The available updates establish an announcement and continued construction reporting, not an operational schedule.
