Western Forest Products’ operating results show real pressure: Q2 2026 revenue and lumber shipments were lower year over year, adjusted EBITDA was close to zero, and the company reported substantial U.S. duties and tariffs. But the available disclosures do not establish that WEF shares are in a current bearish trend. The company’s Q2 results release, dated August 12, 2026, and its Q1 filing explain the business pressures; neither supplies the current price history needed to confirm stock momentum.
What is pressuring Western Forest Products?
The clearest pressures in the company’s disclosures are weaker shipments and revenue, duties and tariffs on lumber entering the United States, and the planned curtailment of its Cowichan Bay sawmill for the rest of 2026. These factors coincided with Q2 adjusted EBITDA of just C$0.4 million. They point to a strained operating environment, but do not by themselves establish how WEF shares have performed since the results were released.
How did Q2 2026 compare with Q2 2025?
Western Forest Products reported these year-over-year results in Canadian dollars:
| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | C$239.6 million | C$289.1 million | Down C$49.5 million, or approximately 17.1% year over year. |
| Adjusted EBITDA | C$0.4 million | C$0.5 million | Near zero in both periods, with a small year-over-year decline. |
| Net income | C$10.5 million | Not stated in the Q2 2026 results figures cited here. | Q2 2026 net income included a C$31.3 million Columbia Vista property-insurance recovery. |
| Lumber shipments | Down 25% year over year, according to management | Comparison base for the reported decline | Management attributed the reduction to softer demand and the loss of Columbia Vista production. |
The net-income figure needs particular care: the C$31.3 million insurance recovery exceeded the reported C$10.5 million net income. The company also reported an operating loss of C$11.9 million before restructuring and other items. That makes net income a poor stand-alone gauge of the quarter’s recurring operating strength.

Adjusted EBITDA also requires context. It included C$2.3 million of share-based compensation expense associated with a 20% increase in the company’s share price. That accounting expense affects the adjusted EBITDA figure, but it is not a direct measure of the stock’s subsequent return or direction.
What do the tariff and duty figures mean?
Western Forest Products’ Q1 2026 quarterly report and Q2 management commentary describe different tariff and duty figures for different periods and purposes. They should not be collapsed into one timeless rate.

| Disclosure | Rate or exposure | Period and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. Section 232 tariff | 10% on imported lumber | The Q1 2026 filing said it took effect October 14, 2025. |
| Combined cash-deposit duty rate | 35.16% | The Q1 filing reported this rate as of March 31, 2026. It is a cash-deposit rate, not a final determination of legal liability; the filing said rates could change through later determinations or reviews. |
| Combined duty and tariff rate cited by management | 45% in Q2 2026, versus 14% in Q2 2025 | This was management’s Q2 comparison. It is not interchangeable with the Q1 filing’s March 31 cash-deposit figure. |
| Canadian operations’ U.S. shipment share | Approximately 17% of total lumber shipments | The Q1 2026 filing’s figure for Q1 2026; it describes shipment volume, not the share of revenue or total company sales. |
These disclosures establish meaningful U.S. trade-policy exposure, while also showing why the rate needs a date and definition attached to it. The roughly 17% shipment share indicates that U.S.-bound lumber was a portion—not all—of Canadian operations’ lumber shipments in Q1. It does not quantify the total financial impact of duties or show how much of the cost the company can pass on to customers.
Why is lumber weakness affecting operations?
Management said Q2 lumber shipments fell 25% year over year, citing softer demand as well as the loss of Columbia Vista production. The company’s disclosures support a conclusion that market conditions and production availability weighed on shipments; they do not provide a verified lumber-price benchmark in the figures cited here. The pressure should therefore be described through the company’s shipment and financial results, not an unsupported claim about a specific market-price move.

Cowichan Bay curtailment
In the Q2 results discussion, CEO Steven Hofer said the company planned to curtail its Cowichan Bay sawmill for the remainder of 2026. He cited persistently weak market conditions, high softwood lumber duties and tariffs, and factors related to the B.C. operating environment. A planned curtailment is a concrete operational response to the conditions management described; the statement does not quantify its future effect on production, costs, or earnings.
Management’s outlook
Hofer also said the company saw “gradual improvements to lumber markets over the midterm.” That is management’s outlook, not an independently established forecast. It offers a more constructive counterpoint to the near-term curtailment, but does not remove the reported Q2 weakness or settle when conditions may improve.

Is WEF stock in a bearish trend?
The operating evidence is weak, but it does not confirm bearish stock momentum. The company’s Q2 release noted a 20% share-price increase associated with the share-based compensation expense; that isolated reference is not a current price series and does not show the direction or persistence of later trading. The company disclosures cited here also do not establish a current valuation multiple or technical indicators.
So the title’s “bearish momentum” should be treated as a question, not a verified technical conclusion. Assessing whether the shares are currently trending down would require dated market-price data and a defined period of comparison. The business results alone support a narrower finding: Western Forest Products faced weaker shipments and revenue, near-zero adjusted EBITDA, and substantial tariff and duty exposure in the periods reported.
