Detroit PBS and 90.9 WRCJ broke ground on the Fred and Barbara Erb Public Media Campus on October 1, 2026, at 234 Piquette Avenue in Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction area. The approximately 50,000-square-foot project is a $40 million campaign that was nearly 75% funded at the groundbreaking; the campus is scheduled to open in fall 2027.

Where the campus is being built

The new campus is at 234 Piquette Avenue, in Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction area. The century-old industrial property was formerly an automotive engineering facility. The project will adapt the building for broadcast, production, education and performance uses while retaining its industrial character.

Detroit PBS announced in April 2024 that it planned to move its headquarters back to Detroit and establish the campus at the Piquette Avenue site. The groundbreaking took place October 1, 2026.

How the $40 million project is funded

Detroit PBS’s October 2026 campaign update put the project at $40 million and said it was nearly 75% funded, according to the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Wayne County committed $2 million.

When the campus is expected to open

The current schedule, reported with the October 2026 groundbreaking, targets an opening in fall 2027. The original May 2024 campaign announcement had anticipated construction later that year and an opening in fall 2026; that earlier target has been superseded.
