Harrison County commissioners were scheduled to consider bids on October 7, 2026, for two rail-trail projects: about 4.3 miles of new construction in Reynoldsville and about 5.2 miles of improvements from Mount Clare to Lost Creek. The scheduled consideration is not confirmation that either contract was awarded; the available reports do not identify winning contractors or bid prices.

Which rail-trail projects were under consideration?

The two contracts cover different phases of work. Reynoldsville is a new trail segment on a former rail corridor; Mount Clare to Lost Creek is an existing trail section slated for upgrades. The lengths below come from the Harrison County Commission’s 2026 bid advertisement.

Project Approximate length Scope and condition
Reynoldsville 4.3 miles New trail construction along a corridor described as overgrown and impassable. The advertised work includes drainage, grading, ditch cleanout, traffic control, signage, soil-slip repair, and bridge safety measures and improvements.
Mount Clare to Lost Creek 5.2 miles Improvements to the existing trail from the Mount Clare Volunteer Fire Department to the existing trailhead at Lost Creek. The section had not been well maintained in recent years, according to WV News.

What construction is planned in Reynoldsville?

The county had recently purchased the property for the Reynoldsville project, WV News reported. Although the former rail corridor is flat, it was described as overgrown and impassable. Commission President Susan Thomas said, “The rails have been taken up, but everything is overgrown,” and pointed to potential slips and drainage needs.

The advertised scope extends beyond clearing vegetation: it includes grading, ditch cleanout, traffic control, signage, soil-slip repair, and bridge safety work. These items indicate a mix of site preparation, drainage and safety improvements; the bid notice does not provide a construction schedule or project cost.

How does the project fit into the county trail route?

Thomas said the Reynoldsville segment would bring the trail close to Route 19, where a crossing solution still needs to be worked out. She also described a future connection toward North View after a bridge is built on the other side. Those comments describe a longer-term route goal, not work confirmed as part of the two bids under consideration.

A separate challenge remains between Spelter and Shinnston. WV News reported that a large slip just past Gypsy Bridge is one obstacle on that route. Thomas said, “There’s a lot of work to be done there.” The two projects on the October 7 agenda therefore would not, by themselves, establish a continuous trail through all of these areas.

What is known about the Mount Clare to Lost Creek bid?

The contract covers approximately 5.2 miles of existing trail between the Mount Clare Volunteer Fire Department and the existing Lost Creek trailhead. The Thrasher Group’s bid page listed a public bid opening for September 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. local time, and listed addenda dated September 10 and September 16. The commission was then scheduled to consider awarding bids on October 7, according to WV News.

The available accounts describe the section as needing upgrades after years without adequate maintenance, but do not itemize its construction work in the same detail as the Reynoldsville notice. The bid page is available from The Thrasher Group.

Were contractors selected, and when will construction begin?

The cited reports establish that award consideration was scheduled for October 7, 2026; they do not establish whether the commission awarded either contract that day. They also do not name bidders or selected contractors, report submitted prices, or give construction start or completion dates. An agenda search result is not confirmation of an award. Readers looking for the outcome should check a subsequent official county meeting record or county update before treating a contractor selection as final.
