Drivers traveling through Keene’s Central Square should expect one lane in each direction from Monday, October 5, through Friday, October 9, 2026. Southbound access through the Square to Main Street is scheduled to close October 6–7; the City’s listed detour is West Street, School Street, then Gilbo Avenue.
What changes on Central Square this week
The City of Keene’s October 2 update schedules northbound and southbound traffic through Central Square to one travel lane each from October 5 through October 9. During that workweek, southbound access through the Square to Main Street is scheduled to close Tuesday, October 6, through Wednesday, October 7. The City lists West Street → School Street → Gilbo Avenue as the detour. Read the City’s weekly construction and traffic update.
These are scheduled impacts, not a guarantee of current street conditions. The City says planned construction and related traffic impacts may change as work progresses. Follow posted signs and traffic control at the site, and check municipal notices before traveling.
Parking and work hours
Several parking spaces on the east and west sides of Central Square are scheduled to be closed from 7:00 a.m. until the workday ends. The City says nearby public parking lots will remain open; see its Parking Services page for lot locations.

Work includes water-main installation along the south side of the Square, from West Street toward Roxbury Street, as well as water-service connections to nearby buildings. Crews may work past 5 p.m., according to the City update.
How this week fits the downtown project
The Central Square work is part of Keene’s wider downtown infrastructure project. The City’s project page, marked updated September 24, 2026, says the contractor’s strategy includes work through early winter. After the Pumpkin Festival, a second crew is planned to begin underground utility work on Main Street between Water Street and Emerald Street. The City describes Central Square as a challenging traffic-management area because five streets meet at one node. Its project-level plan is to maintain at least one lane in each direction through the construction area; the weekly October 5–9 notice gives the specific lane and closure schedule for this week.
