Camino has postponed its move from 434 S. Second St. to 217 W. National Ave. in Walker’s Point by approximately one year. The restaurant attributed the delay to planned street reconstruction in front of its future location. Its Second Street restaurant is expected to remain open during the delay.
Where Camino plans to move—and what changed
The planned destination is the former Engine Company No. 3 building at 217 W. National Ave. Camino’s current Walker’s Point restaurant is at 434 S. Second St. The restaurant announced the delay on Oct. 6, 2026, replacing its earlier target of opening at the new site before the end of 2026.
Camino described the decision this way in a social post quoted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “We’ve made the difficult decision to delay our move for approximately a year. Opening a restaurant at approximately the same moment the street in front of it becomes a major infrastructure project seemed slightly ambitious, even for us.” The announcement sets an approximate delay, not a firm new opening date.
Why the move is delayed
Camino cited planned construction on National Avenue in front of the future restaurant. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the City of Milwaukee, working with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, has a three-year reconstruction project planned for 2.6 miles of West National Avenue, from First to 39th streets.

According to that report, work began in 2026 between 27th and 39th streets. The stretch from First to 11th streets—near Camino’s future site—was scheduled for 2027, with work from 11th to 27th planned for 2028. This is the timeline reported in 2026; it has not been independently confirmed here against a city or WisDOT schedule.
The reported design calls for replacing four travel lanes with two, adding a raised protected bike track and curb extensions, raising crosswalks, and improving lighting and traffic signals. Camino said it did not want to open as the street in front of the restaurant became a major infrastructure project.

Is Camino’s Second Street restaurant staying open?
Yes. Camino said its current restaurant at 434 S. Second St. would stay open while the move is delayed. The announcement does not give a final closing date for that location.
What will happen at the National Avenue site in the meantime?
Camino said it plans to host pop-ups, food collaborations, artists, bands, and neighborhood events at the future site while it waits to move. The announcement quoted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel gives no event dates. Camino also framed the activity as a way to support businesses facing the reconstruction: “These businesses are about to spend several years living alongside one of Milwaukee’s largest street reconstruction projects. We want to help.”

What the move was expected to bring
Before the delay announcement, OnMilwaukee reported that Camino had opened its Walker’s Point location in 2015 and that owner Casey Rataczak said the restaurant had outgrown its current space. The former firehouse was expected to offer more room, a large patio, green space, and room for catering and special events. Those were the goals described before the delay; they are not a confirmed opening plan or guarantee of future programming.
