German manufacturing orders fell 10.6% in August 2026 from July, but the drop was almost entirely a reversal in unusually large orders for other transport equipment—not a broad-based collapse. Excluding large-scale orders, the monthly decline was just 0.1%, according to provisional, price-adjusted figures from Destatis.
What does the 10.6% decline measure?
Destatis reported that new orders in manufacturing were down 10.6% in August from July. The figure is real (price-adjusted) and seasonally and calendar adjusted, making it a short-term month-on-month comparison. It is provisional. On a different basis, the calendar-adjusted figure was 2.7% higher than in August 2025. These rates describe different comparison periods and should not be read as contradictory.
The series covers selected manufacturing branches under Germany’s WZ 2008 classification. Destatis indexes orders at 2021=100 and uses X13 JDemetra+ for seasonal and calendar adjustment. Its release explains that adjusted month-on-month comparisons are intended to show short-term economic development, while calendar-adjusted year-on-year comparisons support longer-term comparisons.
Why was the headline drop so steep?
July had an exceptionally high volume of large orders in other transport equipment, a category that includes aircraft, ships, trains and military vehicles. Those orders more than doubled the sector’s orders in July; Destatis later revised July’s monthly increase in the sector to 129.4%. In August, the sector’s orders fell 61.5%. Destatis said this reversal explains almost all of the overall manufacturing decline.

The large-order-excluded series helps separate that swing from the broader movement: manufacturing orders excluding large-scale orders fell 0.1% month on month in August. That measure was nearly flat, unlike the 10.6% headline.
How do the other comparisons look?
Three-month trend
Across June to August 2026, orders were 1.3% higher than in the preceding three months. Excluding large-scale orders, however, they were 2.6% lower. The overall increase therefore does not describe the underlying movement captured by the large-order-excluded series.

Domestic and foreign orders
Domestic orders fell 17.3% month on month, compared with a 5.4% decline in foreign orders. Within foreign orders, euro-area orders fell 5.4%, while orders from outside the euro area fell 5.5%. These figures use the same real, seasonally and calendar-adjusted monthly basis.
What does manufacturing turnover add?
Real manufacturing turnover was unchanged from July in August and stood 0.9% above August 2025 on a calendar-adjusted basis. Destatis revised July turnover to a 1.4% monthly decline. Turnover measures sales activity, not incoming orders, so its flat monthly result is useful context but does not replace or negate the order figures.
