Abby McLeay, owner of Zen Coffee Company, told WOWT that customers had struggled to find the flagship shop near 24th Avenue and Farnam after crews had worked along Farnam since January. She said customers could still reach the shop using South 25th Street and Douglas. Because closures and traffic controls are temporary, confirm current directions before setting out rather than assuming that route remains unchanged.

McLeay described how construction can disrupt a quick stop: “I just had my sister-in-law this morning tell me it took her 30 minutes just to get through. So, you know, when it takes that long to get somewhere and you plan for a quick two to five minute trip. It’s, you know, you can’t take 30 minutes out of your, you know, route to work to go get coffee,” she told WOWT.
What one business’s experience does—and does not—show
McLeay also told WOWT that Zen Coffee’s third-quarter revenue was down 40% despite the College World Series and summer activities, and that the business had reduced some operations and employee hours amid lower foot traffic. That is the owner’s account of one business, not an audited figure or an estimate for all downtown businesses. The cited reports do not establish a corridor-wide revenue impact.

How long will streetcar construction continue?
The closures above concern a particular phase of utility work, not the full construction schedule. The City of Omaha and Omaha Streetcar Authority’s project timeline lists utility relocations for 2025–2027, testing and commissioning for 2027–2028, and planned in-service operation in 2028. These are project milestones; they do not mean every downtown block will remain closed until 2028. The planned initial route connects downtown Omaha with the Blackstone District. Check the project page for updated milestones and current work locations.
What should drivers, pedestrians and transit riders check?
- Drivers: Check live project notices and follow detour signs. Do not rely on an old route description or estimated reopening date.
- People walking to storefronts: Look for signed pedestrian access and use the route provided at the site; vehicle closures do not by themselves establish that a business is inaccessible on foot.
- Metro riders: Metro’s June 22, 2026 notice said Route 15 was on an extended detour around Farnam and Harney because of streetcar and Nebraska Medicine construction, with possible delays and missed stops. That notice is dated, so check current Metro service alerts for the latest route and stop information.
- Anyone planning to park: Verify current garage access and prices before leaving. A previously reported parking offer may no longer be active.
What support has been reported for affected businesses?
A Sept. 15, 2025 Grow Omaha report said the Greater Omaha Chamber had announced a Midtown Small Business Resiliency Grant Program for businesses most affected by streetcar construction. The report identified Farnam Street from 40th Street to Turner Boulevard as a priority area, citing two-track construction and median platforms that require more lane and parking closures than elsewhere. It also described storefront signs, additional parking lots and garages, and business promotion as support measures. The report does not establish whether applications, awards or funds are currently available; businesses should ask the Chamber for current eligibility and status.
