Marion County accepted the donated house after the lakeshore property was sold without it, making the move the first major step in preserving the building. A decade later, the county still describes a museum as a plan, not an open attraction.
Why the house had to move
The move followed the sale of the lakeshore property, which did not include the house. Marion County accepted the donated building and announced the relocation as the first major step toward preserving it as a museum. The county’s contemporaneous October 25, 2016 announcement said the house would be moved to Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area two days later. Marion County’s announcement records the preservation rationale and the planned route.
The house is associated with the 1935 confrontation involving Ma Barker, her son Fred, the FBI, and local law enforcement. The county describes the episode as the reason for the house’s historical significance and says the building is now at Carney Island. Marion County Parks & Recreation’s Ma Barker House page says the county commission voted to preserve it by moving it to the county park.
How the house crossed Lake Weir
Marion County said the barge journey was expected to take about 30 minutes. In a sponsored anniversary feature published by 352Today on October 6, 2026, Stentiford Construction’s account describes a push boat guiding the house on a barge roughly two miles across the lake; it says the crossing took less than 30 minutes and went smoothly. Those details about the company’s role and the project are sponsor-backed reporting, rather than an independent assessment. 352Today’s anniversary feature recounts the team’s account.

Ocala Magazine’s October 2026 account adds reported project details, including a 26-day preparation period, a 40-by-80-foot barge, and a $252,000 county move cost; these are figures reported by that publication, not figures in the county’s 2016 announcement. Ocala Magazine’s account also quotes Tyler Stentiford, Paul Stentiford’s son: “All the other builders refused to do this project and we don’t shy away from a challenge. We like unique and interesting projects and this is one of them.”

Where the house is now—and what the county plans
The house is at Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area. A 2026 Marion County priorities document describes an intended interpretive center and further site improvements; it documents plans and funding priorities, not a completed center or confirmed opening. The county’s 2026 priorities document sets out that proposed work.
Published area figures do not agree: 352Today’s sponsored feature gives approximately 3,000 square feet, while the county’s 2026 priorities document states 2,100 square feet. Neither figure should be treated as an uncontested measurement.
Can you tour the Ma Barker House?
The available county pages do not establish regular current public access. Marion County advertised a guided tour for September 14, 2024, at $10 per registrant with preregistration, but that listing is evidence of a past event—not a current tour schedule. The county’s 2024 tour listing gives the details for that event. Check with Marion County Parks & Recreation for current access or future tour announcements before making a visit specifically to see the house.
