RPM International reported record sales and adjusted EBITDA for fiscal 2027’s first quarter, even as it described a temporary slowdown in its Construction Products Group. For the quarter ended August 31, 2026, sales rose 4.8% year over year to $2.22 billion, while adjusted EBITDA increased 4.5% to $405.5 million. The results show company-wide growth alongside a specific construction-products headwind—not proof of a broad construction-market contraction.
What were RPM International’s latest earnings?
RPM released its fiscal 2027 first-quarter results on October 6, 2026. The quarter ended August 31. The company reported:
- Net sales: $2.22 billion, up 4.8% year over year.
- Net income: $256.4 million.
- Diluted earnings per share (EPS): $2.01.
- Adjusted diluted EPS: $1.98, up 5.3% year over year.
- Adjusted EBITDA: $405.5 million, up 4.5% year over year.
Net income and diluted EPS are reported measures; adjusted EPS and adjusted EBITDA are company-defined adjusted measures. RPM changed its primary adjusted operating-profit measure from adjusted EBIT to adjusted EBITDA in fiscal 2027, so comparisons of that measure across years require care. RPM’s October 6 earnings release provides the company’s results and definitions.
How did construction-related weakness affect the results?
RPM said its Construction Products Group (CPG) faced a temporary slowdown during the quarter. The company also cited raw-material inflation as a challenge. It said organic growth in Performance Coatings and Consumer, together with efforts to improve manufacturing, procurement and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) efficiency, helped overcome those pressures. Consolidated sales and adjusted EBITDA still grew.

This is RPM’s account of conditions affecting its own business. It does not establish that construction activity overall is contracting: the evidence cited here does not include independent measures of construction starts, permits, project awards or spending.
How do RPM’s segments and reporting changes affect comparisons?
RPM reported that Performance Coatings and Consumer delivered solid organic growth, helping offset the CPG slowdown. Comparisons among segments need to account for a reporting change: effective June 1, 2026, RPM moved certain Latin American businesses into Performance Coatings Group. Those operations represent approximately $143 million in annual revenue and had previously been split between CPG and Consumer. RPM says it recast the current and prior periods presented, with no effect on consolidated results. Use the recast figures in the fiscal 2027 first-quarter release when comparing segment performance.

What is RPM’s outlook for fiscal 2027?
For fiscal 2027’s second quarter, RPM expects sales and adjusted EBITDA growth in the low- to mid-single-digit range. For the full fiscal year, it expects mid-single-digit growth in both sales and adjusted EBITDA. These are company forecasts, not reported results, and do not specify a more precise percentage within those ranges.
The forecast follows a strong prior year: RPM reported fiscal 2026 net sales of $7.86 billion, up 6.7%, and adjusted diluted EPS of $5.53, up 4.3%. Its fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter sales were $2.23 billion, up 7.2%, and adjusted diluted EPS was $1.89, up 9.9%, according to the July 22, 2026 year-end release. Fiscal 2027 first-quarter sales were lower in dollar terms than the preceding quarter, but that sequential comparison alone does not establish a demand trend because seasonality has not been accounted for.

What earlier company commentary adds—and what it does not
In January 2026, RPM said an extended government shutdown had lengthened construction-project lead times in fiscal 2026’s second quarter. It also cited negative consumer sentiment and facility-consolidation costs as pressures on sales growth and earnings. The company announced SG&A-focused actions it expected to yield approximately $100 million in annual benefits once fully implemented. That earlier commentary is context for the company’s operational measures and project timing; it does not show that those same conditions continued unchanged in fiscal 2027’s first quarter. See RPM’s fiscal 2026 second-quarter release.

RPM’s latest quarter combines growth at the consolidated level with softness in one construction-related group. The figures support a company-specific reading: growth in other businesses and efficiency efforts helped counter the CPG slowdown and input-cost pressure. CEO Frank C. Sullivan described the quarter as one of record sales and adjusted EBITDA; that is management’s characterization, supported by the reported totals, rather than an independent assessment of construction demand.
