Lucas Daggs began in construction by installing underground utilities as a pipelayer. A conversation with a general-contractor employee at a job site helped him picture a different next step: studying construction management and building a career that could offer both financial opportunity and tangible results.
How Lucas Daggs moved from pipelaying toward construction management
Daggs started his college studies at Nashville State Community College and later transferred to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he studies commercial construction management. In an October 5, 2026 profile, MTSU News reported that he was also working as a labor foreman and had been named a Buchanan Transfer Fellow.
His interest in management grew from a job-site exchange. Daggs said conversations with a general-contractor employee helped him see a future in construction management. MTSU News reported that the contractor noticed his work ethic and offered him a future internship. The profile does not identify the contractor or provide the offer’s terms or timing.
Daggs described the appeal of the work this way: “One of the most attractive things in the field of construction to me is that we are building something tangible and often will impact people’s lives for the better.” The MTSU profile also quoted him saying that, as a management career came into view, “For once in my life, I saw the possibility for a financially successful future for myself.”

Why he chose MTSU
Daggs said MTSU made sense to him because of tuition, location, and the quality of education. Its location also let him keep working while taking classes. Those are his reasons for choosing the university, not a comparative assessment of MTSU and other schools.
After completing his undergraduate studies, he plans to pursue a master’s degree in construction and an MBA. These are future plans, not credentials he has already earned.
