Construction has officially begun on the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department’s South Station at 911 Ocean Parkway. WMDT reported the start on October 6, 2026. The rebuild is planned for the existing station site, with completion forecast for November or December 2027—not a confirmed opening date.
Has construction started on the Ocean Pines fire station?
Yes. WMDT reported on October 6, 2026, that construction had officially begun. That milestone follows an earlier stage: OPVFD’s project page said site work was underway in May 2026. The two dates describe different phases, rather than conflicting start dates.
Where is the South Station being rebuilt?
The project is on the existing South Station footprint at 911 Ocean Parkway in Berlin, Maryland. Worcester County’s September 10, 2025, technical review packet described the proposal as a firehouse with indoor bays and parking. That review describes the site proposal, not a final construction specification. (Worcester County review packet)
Why is the station being replaced?
The original South Station was built in 1981, with additions in 1985 and 1987, according to Maryland’s 2023 bond initiative fact sheet. Earlier planning materials cited aging conditions along with code, accessibility, circulation and operational concerns. Those are findings from prior project planning, not a new 2026 condition assessment.

What will change for firefighters?
OPVFD President Joe Enste said the project will add larger living quarters and room for training. WMDT quoted him describing recruitment and retention as a goal: “One, it’s going to help us from a recruitment and retention standpoint, both from a volunteer and career standpoint.”
During construction, the department shifted its arrangements and used a temporary station behind the former South Station. WMDT reported there was no lapse in service.

OPVFD’s project page describes the 2025 referendum as asking whether the Ocean Pines Association (OPA) should proceed at a target cost of up to $3.4 million, with a possible 10 percent variance. The page ties that framework to a July 12, 2024 memorandum of understanding. It is an authorization framework, not a confirmed final project cost.
