Charter Construction celebrated the topping out of The Motley’s first residential tower in Midtown Nashville on September 3, 2026. The 26-story concrete structure has reached its planned full height, but exterior and interior work remain; phase one is forecast to be completed in 2027.
What does topping out mean for The Motley in Nashville?
Topping out marks the point when the building’s structure reaches its full height. For The Motley Tower 1, that followed the final concrete work on the 26-story structure. It is a construction milestone, not a sign that the tower is finished or ready for residents.
HASTINGS Architecture and REJournals place the celebration on Thursday, September 3, 2026. CityNowNext reported on September 10 that exterior-envelope and interior-finishing work were continuing. REJournals published its report on October 6, 2026.
Where is The Motley being built?
The Motley Tower 1 is under construction at 1401 Church Street in Midtown Nashville, on the site of a former dairy plant. HASTINGS Architecture says the tower surrounds a central landscaped plaza.

What is planned for the first tower?
REJournals reported that the 26-story Tower 1 is planned to contain 326 rental residences, ground-floor retail and resident amenities. CityNowNext reported a phase-one plan for 27,000 square feet of amenities, including social lounges, an outdoor pool and sun deck, co-working spaces, a fitness center, and indoor and outdoor dog parks. It also reported more than 14,000 square feet of ground-level retail, to be developed by IPB Properties with Ojas Partners.
Those are planned features, not confirmed completed or open facilities. At full build-out, CityNowNext reported plans for nearly 1,200 rental homes and more than 70,000 square feet of restaurant and other commercial space across the development. That broader figure describes the overall project, not Tower 1 alone.

What shapes the tower’s design?
HASTINGS Architecture connects the exterior’s precast concrete panels and scalloped texture to the dairy site’s former silos. The firm says “Dancing Arches,” derived from those silos, animate the tower’s base and top. These are the architect’s descriptions of the design’s references and intent.
