Construction is underway on the new UTRGV Tennis Complex, which the university expects to complete in early 2027. The planned facility will serve the Vaqueros’ men’s and women’s tennis programs and include eight courts, seating for about 500 fans, and a renovated team space in the adjacent UTRGV Pavilion.
When is the UTRGV Tennis Complex expected to be finished?
UTRGV Athletics announced on September 29, 2026, that construction is underway and gave early 2027 as the expected completion period. That is an estimate, not a confirmed opening date. The announcement does not give a construction percentage or a more detailed schedule. UTRGV Athletics’ project announcement is the source for the timeline and planned features.
What will the complex include?
The planned home for both UTRGV tennis teams will have eight courts, collectively named the Orville I. Cox Courts. UTRGV says Cox was a former president of the Pan American College Board of Regents and an inductee in the UTRGV Athletics Hall of Honor.
Six courts for competition and spectators
Six courts are planned in a two-by-three grid, with bleachers along the sideline of three courts. Lower fencing around the playing surface is intended to improve sightlines for spectators.

Two additional courts for practice and warmups
Two courts behind the fan seating are planned primarily for warmups and practice, but they will also be suitable for tournament-style competition. All eight courts are to have lights, orange playing areas, and contrasting gray surrounds that reflect UTRGV’s colors.
Seating and support spaces
The complex is planned to seat approximately 500 fans, about 200 more than the Vaqueros’ current tennis center. Plans also include an equipment room and restrooms.

How does the UTRGV Pavilion fit into the project?
A dedicated walkway south of the courts will connect the complex to the 10,200-square-foot UTRGV Pavilion, originally completed in 2024. The Pavilion is to be renovated with tennis team locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and an equipment room, making it the permanent home of both programs. It already contains a weight room and sports medicine training room used by multiple UTRGV teams.

UTRGV Athletics describes nearly $200 million in construction, renovations, and enhancements across 13 capital projects affecting all 18 sports programs, in progress or completed since 2021. That figure covers the broader athletics facilities effort; the announcement does not state a standalone budget for the tennis complex.

The announcement also does not identify a contractor or provide an exact opening day. UTRGV says naming opportunities are available throughout the complex; interested parties can use the giving interest form linked in the official announcement.
