The report cites two people familiar with the matter, but Saudi officials have not confirmed a formal cancellation. The distinction matters: a project described as on hold is not necessarily abandoned, and no replacement venue has been identified in the reporting.
Has Saudi Arabia shelved the NEOM Stadium?
Reuters reported on 4 October 2026 that Saudi Arabia was quietly shelving plans for the stadium indefinitely, citing two sources familiar with the matter. NEOM and the Saudi government media office did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. The Ministry of Sports referred Reuters to the World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority, which said substantial delivery of construction milestones was taking place but did not address the stadium or its costs. Reuters’ report
That makes indefinite shelving the reported status, not an officially confirmed cancellation. The authority’s general statement about construction milestones does not establish whether work on this particular stadium will proceed.
What is known about the project’s status, cost and schedule?
MEED Projects data shared with Reuters lists the stadium as “on hold,” estimates its cost at $2.5 billion and gives no completion date. These are project-tracker details reported by Reuters, not a new official Saudi announcement or a confirmed final cost. Reuters’ account of MEED Projects data

For construction planning, the practical point is that the available reporting offers no current completion date. It does not establish a revised schedule, a formal cancellation decision or what would happen to the proposed site and associated works.
What was the NEOM Stadium supposed to be?
Saudi Arabia’s 2034 World Cup bid proposed a 46,000-capacity stadium in the first phase of The Line. Saudi Press Agency described the planned venue as more than 350 metres above ground within The Line. Those figures describe the bid-era concept, not evidence of current funding or a live construction schedule. Saudi Press Agency’s bid-era description

The Line is part of the wider NEOM development. In April 2026, Reuters reported that Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan said The Line was no longer a priority and was not vital before 2030, its original target for the first phase. Reuters also reported that he denied any projects had been cancelled. Those remarks provide broader context but do not confirm the stadium’s fate. Reuters on remarks about The Line

The report does not establish that the country’s wider tournament venue program has been cancelled or revised. Reuters described Saudi Arabia as developing or renovating 15 venues across five cities, along with dozens of training facilities, and said work on other planned stadiums was progressing. It did not name a replacement for NEOM Stadium. Reuters on the wider 2034 venue program
