The announced deadline is the end of Thursday, 8 October 2026; because that date is imminent, check the Care Inspectorate’s current application page to confirm applications are still being accepted.
Who can apply?
The current invitation is for care homes for adults and older people in Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders. It is not a Scotland-wide invitation to every care home. The Care Inspectorate’s 30 September 2026 announcement sets out these eligible areas.
The announcement does not specify an inspection-grade threshold or require a readiness assessment. A general programme page describes arrangements from earlier cohorts, including a Grade 3 (adequate) readiness-assessment process, but those details are not confirmed as cohort-four eligibility rules.
What is the application deadline and how many applications can a home submit?
The deadline in the current announcement is the end of Thursday, 8 October 2026. Each care home should submit only one application. As the deadline may have passed by the time you read this, check the Care Inspectorate’s current CHIP page or application form for the latest status before acting.

What does taking part involve?
Each participating home will carry out an improvement project intended to make a positive impact in its service. The Care Inspectorate says participants “will be allocated an improvement adviser who will provide dedicated support throughout the programme.” The current announcement does not give cohort-four dates, an event timetable, or detailed participation requirements.
What kind of improvement project might a home consider?
The programme’s wider aims include quality-improvement methods, leadership development, peer learning, following up inspection outcomes and sustaining changes. The current invitation does not prescribe project subjects. Earlier cohort-one examples included improving the mealtime experience, meaningful activity and documentation; those are examples from that historical cohort, not a required list for cohort four.

The general programme description also discusses self-evaluation and participation tools, learning events, group support and individual adviser sessions. These provide background on the programme, but the page refers to earlier cohorts and should not be treated as a confirmed schedule for the fourth cohort.
Does CHIP provide a grant or pay for equipment?
The current application notice describes adviser-supported improvement work but does not promise a grant, equipment budget or reimbursement. It also names no required physical product. Homes should not assume that participation funds building work or purchases; ask the Care Inspectorate directly about any financial or practical support not set out in the invitation.
