The Architects’ Journal reported that the section is scheduled to close to vehicles on 26 October 2026, with seating and tree-lined public spaces planned for spring 2027. These are reported plans, not completed works.
What do the new Oxford Street visuals show?
The Architects’ Journal reported on 6 October 2026 that East Architecture had posted the visuals on LinkedIn the previous day. Its report describes them as showing the first phase, running between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street. The images themselves and a detailed official design pack were not independently reviewed, so specific features beyond the reported seating and tree-lined public spaces cannot be confirmed here. The Architects’ Journal’s report also quotes East director Dann Jessen describing the first phase as a “dream project” and saying Londoners would be invited to test and review the work as plans progress through “transitional stages.”
Which part of Oxford Street is approved for pedestrianisation?
The approved first phase is Oxford Street West, between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street. City Hall’s Mayoral Decision MD3475, signed and published on 26 February 2026, approved proposals in TfL’s consultation report and directed TfL to take the necessary steps to remove traffic from that section. It does not approve pedestrianisation of the entire street. City Hall’s decision record and TfL’s consultation material set out the west-phase boundary and proposal.
When is the west section expected to become traffic-free?
The Architects’ Journal reports that the route is scheduled to close to vehicles on 26 October 2026, with seating and tree-lined public spaces planned for spring 2027. Both dates are future plans as of 7 October 2026; the report does not establish that the timetable will be met. The Mayor’s February announcement said he had asked the team to move at pace with plans to pedestrianise Oxford Street “this summer.” That announcement describes the intended programme, while the later trade-press report gives the specific vehicle-closure date. What is planned for access, buses and the public realm?
TfL’s consultation proposal placed affected bus stops approximately 100–200 metres from Oxford Street, depending on final detailed designs. It also proposed seating and rest areas, and work with Westminster City Council on nearby footways to support access to the street, bus stops, taxi pick-up and drop-off points, and Tube stations. Some journeys extending beyond Oxford Street West may require passengers to change buses. These are consultation proposals, not a guarantee of the final operating arrangements. TfL’s consultation page.
City Hall described broader public-realm intentions: more seating and rest areas, good lighting, clear signage, CCTV, low-carbon materials, trees and planting, and space able to host events. These are announced principles, not confirmed specifications for every feature shown in East’s visuals. The 2026 decision record says the 2025 consultation received more than 6,000 responses; among responses to the question about the principle of pedestrianisation, 66 per cent supported it. That is a consultation-response figure, not a representative poll of all Londoners. City Hall’s decision record.

Is Oxford Street East also being pedestrianised?
Oxford Street East is separate from the approved west-phase scheme. TfL says transport and highway changes for the remaining sections would be subject to later consultation. Westminster City Council says bus travel is to continue on the eastern section between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road, where pedestrianisation presents particular challenges. The west-phase approval therefore should not be read as a decision to remove traffic or buses along the whole street. TfL’s consultation material; Westminster City Council’s statement.
