Penn State’s Nursing Sciences Building renovation renewed aging building systems and added flexible teaching and collaboration space at the University Park campus. Penn State reports substantial completion in July 2025; Barton Education lists completion in September 2025. The project also received an Award of Merit in ENR MidAtlantic’s 2026 Higher Education/Research category.
Why Penn State renovated the Nursing Sciences Building
The Board of Trustees described the building as 44 years old and approved work to address a maintenance backlog. Penn State’s November 2023 announcement put that backlog at approximately $12 million. The project’s purpose was both practical and educational: renew aging systems while creating more adaptable settings for nursing instruction and student collaboration.
The Board authorized expenditure and contract awards not to exceed $28 million and named SLAM Collaborative as designer. The approval materials identified new glazing and building-envelope work, HVAC replacement, replacement of inefficient lighting and renewal of failing finishes. What changed in the renovation and addition
The project paired renewal of the existing facility with new space for teaching, study and collaboration. Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant describes the completed project as including a Knowledge Commons, flexible learning areas, collaboration rooms, a SIM Flex space, graduate study areas, exterior modernization, advanced mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades, and preservation of heritage trees. Figures changed between Penn State’s proposed-project announcements and its later project page. The difference should be read as a change in reported scope, not as interchangeable measurements.
| Project detail | Proposed or planned figure | Later reported figure |
|---|---|---|
| Addition area | 2,700 square feet, in Penn State’s November 2023 project announcement | 3,600 square feet, on Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant project page |
| Active-learning classroom capacity | 180 people, in Penn State’s November 2023 announcement and May 2024 groundbreaking announcement | 210 people, described as a simulation-ready classroom on Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant project page |
The proposed addition was described as being on the building’s northwest side. Penn State’s May 2024 announcement dates the groundbreaking ceremony to May 6, 2024. Penn State’s November 2023 project announcement · Penn State’s May 2024 groundbreaking announcement
How the design was intended to support nursing education
Penn State presented the active-learning classroom as a setting for hands-on practice, critical thinking and decision-making in a controlled environment. The university also said interactive active learning was intended to help students develop communication and teamwork skills. These are the project’s stated educational aims, not reported measurements of learning outcomes.
Laurie Badzek, dean of the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing, said in November 2023: “This renovation project will enhance our teaching and learning spaces by creating truly collaborative, experiential learning environments,” Penn State’s November 2023 announcement

When the project was completed
The two published completion dates refer to different source descriptions, and the available project information does not explain the difference.
- July 2025: Penn State’s Office of Physical Plant lists this as the project’s substantial-completion date.
- September 2025: Barton Education, identified as the MEP engineer, lists the project as completed in this month. Its profile gives a total project area of 32,700 square feet and describes renovation of the second and third floors, new HVAC, electrical-service and power-distribution upgrades, technology upgrades, and lighting systems.
Neither source establishes a public opening or occupancy date. Penn State’s July date is explicitly substantial completion; Barton’s September date is labeled completion, with no further milestone definition. Penn State Office of Physical Plant · Barton Education project profile
2026 construction-industry recognition
The project appears in two distinct 2026 awards listings:
- Construction Management Association of America: Listed in the Education category for projects with construction value below $50 million. CMAA identifies Penn State as owner and Alexander Building Construction Co. as the CM/PM project team. CMAA Project Achievement Awards 2026
- Engineering News-Record MidAtlantic: Listed as an Award of Merit in Higher Education/Research and submitted by Alexander Building Construction Co. This is an Award of Merit, not an overall regional best-project designation. ENR MidAtlantic 2026 Best Projects winners
What the public project record does—and does not—show
The published information documents the project’s approved budget cap, renewal scope, added educational spaces, reported completion milestones and awards. It does not provide measured post-occupancy results for student learning, building energy use, carbon, space utilization or nursing-workforce outcomes. The educational benefits described by Penn State should therefore be understood as design intent rather than demonstrated performance.
