What is Le Centre Brown?
Le Centre Brown is the Washington International School (WIS) Tregaron Science Building, a new facility intended to support science, design, and interdisciplinary learning. WIS says it was completed in summer 2025; the school’s campaign page says it opened in August 2025. WIS’s building page describes the space as supporting investigation, experimentation, collaboration, and social connection.
Reported floor area varies by source: WIS and Engineering News-Record (ENR) give 58,000 square feet, while contractor MCN Build gives 57,000 square feet. Those figures are best treated as publisher-attributed descriptions rather than a single settled measurement. WIS · MCN Build · ENR (2026)
What does the building contain?
The program combines specialist teaching rooms with places for making, preparing, eating, and sharing work. WIS lists chemistry, physics, biology, and general science labs for middle and upper school, plus spacious classrooms and lab preparation areas. How does the design fit the Tregaron site?
The building sits on WIS’s six-acre Tregaron Campus, a constrained and historically sensitive hillside site whose landmark is a 1912 Georgian Revival mansion. Rather than placing the full building above ground, MCN Build says two levels extend below grade beneath the existing soccer field. Light wells, landscaped areaways, and strategically positioned windows bring daylight into those lower spaces while limiting the building’s visible mass on the hillside. ENR reports that the work required an excavation 30 feet deep, a reinforced-concrete superstructure, and approximately 22,000 square feet of brick pavers. These are project figures reported by ENR, not independent measurements. ENR (2026)
What construction challenges did the project address?
Construction took place on an occupied campus with a single entrance and exit point, according to ENR. Deliveries, concrete pours, utility work, trucking, staging, traffic control, and paving therefore had to be coordinated around ongoing campus activity. To move large mechanical and kitchen equipment safely, the project team built a temporary road, avoiding overloading existing drives and impacts to a historic bridge. ENR (2026)

The historic Dacha House, which stood within the building footprint, was relocated instead of demolished. ENR says it was lifted hydraulically, moved on wheels, and placed at a new location on new footings and foundations. An existing exterior-rated generator was also moved into the building basement and upgraded with a new exhaust system, soundproofing, and piping. ENR (2026)
For the ground-floor laboratories, ENR reports that a reverse-osmosis system provides water infrastructure for science instruction. The detail reflects a project-specific building service rather than a general claim about all WIS facilities. ENR (2026)

WIS’s construction updates describe related campus work: landscape improvements, new stairs from the Macomb Street entrance, restoration of the four-square garden, and continued partnership with the Tregaron Conservancy. That is the school’s stated status; no independent certification-directory record or certification date is established in the cited material. The same page mentions other campus-wide sustainability efforts, including renewable energy credits, geothermal power for the historic mansion, and recycling and composting. Who delivered the project, and what recognition did it receive?
ENR’s 2026 East Best Projects coverage names Washington International School as owner, Shalom Baranes Associates Architects as lead design firm, MCN Build as general contractor, and JM Zell Partners as owner’s representative.
