How much did Canadian lumber production fall?
Statistics Canada estimated that Canadian sawmills produced 3,546.4 thousand cubic metres of lumber in July 2026. The volume was 6.7% below July 2025 and 8.6% below June 2026. The headlineâs 7% refers to the year-over-year change, not the larger month-over-month decline. Statistics Canadaâs July 2026 release was published October 5, 2026.
Why did production decline?
The July release gives the size of the decline but does not identify its cause. The cited official statistics do not establish a specific explanation, so attributing the change to demand, trade, mill shutdowns, or another factor would go beyond the available evidence.
Production and shipments are different measures
Sawmills shipped 3,728.9 thousand cubic metres of lumber in July 2026. Shipments were down 7.8% from July 2025 and 10.3% from June 2026. These are shipment figures, not production figures; they should not be used as interchangeable measures of what mills made during the month.

Statistics Canada describes its monthly Sawmills survey as measuring âthe quantities of lumber produced and shipped by Canadian manufacturers.â Its survey profile provides further information about the program: Statistics Canadaâs Sawmills survey description.
How to interpret the July estimate
- It is not seasonally adjusted. The month-to-month change is a comparison of the reported monthly estimates, not a seasonally adjusted measure of underlying trend.
- It can be revised. Statistics Canada says the figures are subject to revision; the July release notes revisions for January 2025 through June 2026. The published values should therefore be understood as estimates that may change.
Trade and industry context
Global Affairs Canada reported 845,715,110 board feet of CanadaâUS softwood lumber exports for July 2026. That is a separate, permit-based export measure, reported in board feet and subject to correction and final reconciliation. It is not a production statistic and should not be directly compared with Statistics Canadaâs all-lumber production estimate without accounting for differences in measure, unit, scope, and status. For broader context, Statistics Canada says forestry represented 0.9% of Canadaâs real GDP, or $21.6 billion, in 2024, and that softwood accounted for about 98% of Canadaâs wood production. Those figures describe the sector and its composition; they do not explain the July 2026 monthly decline. Statistics Canadaâs lumber-industry infographic was updated in 2026.
