Cement makers are expanding renewable power and other energy projects to reduce exposure to conventional electricity costs and lower electricity-related emissions. In India, Icra expects green-power capacity at major cement companies to rise from around 4 GW in March 2026 to 5.8–6 GW by March 2028, according to a 6 October 2026 report by Business Standard. That is a forecast of planned growth, not a measure of capacity already operating.

Why cement companies are investing in green energy

Cement production uses substantial energy, and electricity is one part of that demand. Generating or procuring renewable electricity can reduce reliance on conventional power and help lower Scope 2 emissions associated with purchased electricity. Companies also cite energy management and waste-heat recovery as ways to reduce energy use and support cost competitiveness.

The financial case is strategic, but the available company and sector figures do not establish one comparable, realized cost-saving amount. Actual savings depend on project costs, power contracts, plant demand, grid conditions and the period measured. The reported investment trend should not be read as proof that every project has already reduced costs.

How large is the planned expansion in India?

Business Standard reported on 6 October 2026 that Icra expects green-power capacity among major Indian cement companies to grow from around 4 GW in March 2026 to 5.8–6 GW by March 2028—nearly 50% growth. The report also says Adani Cement is developing around 1 GW of solar and wind capacity, with investment of around ₹5,000–6,000 crore. These are reported forecasts and plans, not verified operating capacity or completed expenditure; the figures were reported in the article’s search-result excerpt.

Ambuja Cements: reported share and targets

Ambuja Cements’ FY2025–26 natural-capital disclosure says renewable and green sources supplied 31% of its power in that reporting year. The company targets 60% by FY2028, supported by plans for 1 GW of solar and wind capacity and 376 MW of waste-heat recovery systems. These are company-reported performance and targets, rather than a sector-wide outcome. Ambuja’s FY2025–26 coverage includes Sanghi Industries and Penna Cement following their 2026 mergers; it also notes that FY2022–23 covered 15 months, which limits straightforward year-to-year comparisons. See the FY2025–26 Integrated Report, Natural Capital.

Green electricity is only one part of cement decarbonization

Renewable electricity can reduce emissions tied to electricity consumption, but it does not remove the emissions created by cement’s core chemistry. In clinker production, calcination releases carbon dioxide as limestone is transformed. Fuel use and process emissions therefore need measures beyond renewable power, such as efficiency improvements, alternative fuels, lower-clinker products and, where feasible, carbon capture.

DOKIO 800W Solar Panel Set, Two 400W 31V Panels for 24V Off-Grid Systems
  • [800W CAPACITY] Two 400W panels deliver 800W (STC)—size your controller/inverter for the combined current; MPPT strongly recommended.
  • [PARALLEL FIRST ON 12V] Prioritize parallel on 12 V for safer voltage and steadier charging; series only when your controller supports higher input voltage.
  • [3 m LEADS PER PANEL] 3 m MC4 leads on each panel enable longer reaches without immediate extensions—fewer added connectors, simpler runs.
  • [LESS HARDWARE THAN 8×100W] Compared with eight 100W panels, you’ll have far fewer joints/branch connectors, reducing failure points and time on the roof.
  • [BUILT FOR OUTDOORS] Tempered glass + aluminum frame with sealed junction boxes for year-round yard/garden installations.

That distinction matters when comparing company claims: a renewable-power share is not the same as a reduction in total plant emissions. Nor can a forecast for one installation be treated as a measured result across a company or the industry.

Plans outside India combine renewables with wider changes

Cementir Holding’s 2026–2028 industrial plan projects approximately €77 million in sustainability investments. The amount covers a broad programme, not a renewables-only budget. It includes wind turbines in Belgium, expanded renewable electricity procurement through long-term power-purchase agreements and on-site wind or solar, as well as upgrades to FUTURECEM production, greater use of alternative fuels in several markets, natural-gas transitions at plants in Denmark and Belgium, and feasibility work for carbon capture in Belgium. The plan was presented on 12 February 2026; details are on the company’s strategy and industrial-plan page.

Electrified heat could extend the role of renewable power

Renewable electricity can also be used to provide industrial heat, rather than only powering electrical equipment. In an announcement dated 12 November 2025, Adani Cement and Coolbrook said they would deploy Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater commercially at the Boyareddypalli integrated plant in Andhra Pradesh. The companies said the system would use Adani’s renewable electricity portfolio to provide clean heat, including for drying alternative fuels.

Adani Cement and Coolbrook forecast around 60,000 tonnes of annual CO₂ reductions from the project. That is a company projection, not a measured result. The announcement described it as the first commercial industrial deployment of the heater in a cement plant and said the technology could be replicated; neither point establishes that the projected savings have already been achieved. The companies’ announcement is available from the Adani Group.

What to check when comparing cement-energy claims

  • Status: Is the figure operating capacity, construction underway, a target or a forecast?
  • Boundary: Does the percentage refer to electricity, total energy or total emissions—and which emissions scopes are counted?
  • Timing and coverage: Which reporting year and facilities are included? Mergers, reporting-period changes and project commissioning dates can affect comparisons.
  • Technology and geography: Solar, wind, power-purchase agreements, waste-heat recovery and electrified heat address different parts of energy demand; local grid conditions and plant processes also matter.
  • Evidence for savings: A stated investment or cost rationale is not itself a verified cost saving. Look for a defined plant, contract period and measured comparison before treating a savings figure as established.
