Project Marinus marked a construction kickoff on 2 October 2026 with a ceremonial sod turn in Tasmania. The event is a milestone, not evidence that construction is already under way across every part of the project. Stage 1 is expected to begin construction in 2026, with operation targeted for 2030 or late 2030.
What the Project Marinus kickoff means
The Tasmanian Government reported the sod-turn event on 2 October 2026 as a ceremonial start to Project Marinus. It should not be read as confirmation that all construction work across the project has commenced. The government’s project information says Stage 1 construction is expected to begin in 2026. Tasmanian Government announcement Tasmanian ReCFIT project page
Stage 1 reached an earlier investment milestone on 1 August 2025, when the Commonwealth, Victorian and Tasmanian governments confirmed a Final Investment Decision. Joint government announcement
What Project Marinus includes
Project Marinus comprises two connected pieces: Marinus Link, an electricity interconnector between north-west Tasmania and Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, and the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD), which upgrade Tasmania’s transmission network to support the link. The interconnector is designed to carry electricity in both directions. Tasmanian ReCFIT project page Project FAQ

The project company describes the intended system as linking Victorian wind and solar generation with Tasmania’s flexible hydropower and geographically diverse wind. That is the project’s rationale; it does not guarantee a particular electricity price or consumer saving. Marinus Link project description
Stage 1 and the full two-link proposal
Capacity figures depend on which scope is being discussed. Stage 1 is a 750 MW interconnector, with undersea, underground and overhead infrastructure, converter stations, and associated NWTD Stage 1 upgrades. The Victorian planning authority describes the broader proposed two-link system as two 750 MW cables, totalling 1,500 MW. These figures describe different project scopes, not a change to Stage 1’s capacity. Project FAQ Victorian planning authority project page

Schedule and expected construction benefits
The Tasmanian project page says Stage 1 construction is expected to begin in 2026 and targets commercial operation in 2030. Its FAQ describes the interconnector as expected to be operational from late 2030. These are schedule expectations, not confirmation of completed construction or a guaranteed commissioning date. The Australian Government estimates the project will support around 2,400 jobs across Tasmania and Victoria. This is a forecast, not a count of jobs already created. The same government source compares Stage 1’s 750 MW capacity with the power needs of around 750,000 homes; that is an equivalence, not a measure of household supply delivered.
