What the milestone means
In an update published on 2 October 2026, SSEN Transmission said both principal construction compounds were “fully established and operational.” They provide office accommodation, welfare facilities and storage for project teams and supply-chain partners working on the onshore cable package. They are construction bases, not operating stations for the finished link. SSEN Transmission’s announcement describes the milestone.
Where the compounds are and who is based there

These are the staff figures SSEN reported for the two compounds at that time. They are not a combined project headcount or a measure of total jobs created. The contractors named for the onshore work are not, by that fact alone, advertising vacancies or procurement opportunities.
How long is the cable link?
SSEN describes the project as a 2 GW high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link with a total route of about 203 km between Banniskirk Hub in Caithness and Netherton Hub in Aberdeenshire. Of that, 166 km is subsea cable, running from Sinclair’s Bay through the Moray Firth to Rattray Head. The figures refer to different parts of the project: the subsea section is not the total route. SSEN set out the 203 km project description in its February 2026 progress update; its October milestone announcement reports the 166 km subsea section and 2 GW capacity.

The project is intended to help move renewable electricity from northern Scotland to demand centres and support energy security. Its eventual role is distinct from the current construction activity at the compounds.
What construction work is under way?
Onshore cable installation support
The compounds are bases for the teams and supply-chain partners delivering the onshore cable package. SSEN identifies John Gunn and Sons with Caithness onshore cable work and Nicol of Skene with work in the Peterhead area. The compounds provide facilities and storage for that work; they are not themselves the route or the cable.
Horizontal directional drilling at the landfalls
At Rattray Head, SSEN reported on 2 October 2026 that a 1.7 km horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operation was under construction to create the landfall connection. HDD creates a bore beneath the coastline so ducts can be installed without open trenching across the beach. SSEN says this approach is intended to minimise effects on the local environment and surrounding area.
The October update forecast that work at Rattray Head would progress over the following 12 months and that similar HDD work at Sinclair’s Bay was scheduled to begin in late 2027. These were schedule expectations stated on 2 October 2026, not guarantees of completion dates. An earlier project-page update, dated 10 June 2026, described four Rattray Head drill paths—three for cables and one spare—with 457 mm steel ducts, and gave a late July 2027 completion target for the HDD. SSEN’s project page and updates contain that earlier detail.

Why the compounds matter to delivery
Large cable projects require places to coordinate crews, support workers and store materials near the work fronts. The two compounds establish those bases at opposite ends of the onshore route. SSEN Project Director Niall Macleod called their establishment “an important milestone” and said the facilities would act as operational centres for teams and supply-chain partners. That describes the construction phase: the cable link remains a project under delivery, not an operational connection.
SSEN’s figures and schedule statements are project-owner reporting; they are not independently audited measures. Its project material also discusses local supply-chain opportunities, but the compound announcement does not establish a specific open job, tender or supplier referral scheme.
