YKAD Architectural Design Office designed the Yumoto Electric INC. Factory in Osaka as a factory whose greenery, visible production areas and street-facing stair are intended to connect manufacturing with the surrounding streetscape. ArchDaily lists the project at 2,100 m² and dates it 2026; that listing does not establish a verified completion date.
How does the factory connect manufacturing with the street?
The architects describe the project as a response to the often utilitarian street edges of small factories in semi-industrial districts, where buildings may sit close to the street with little setback. Their stated aim is to bring greenery, people and manufacturing activity into a closer relationship with the surrounding streetscape.
“Rather than a factory closed off from the city, this project aims to create a place where greenery, people, and manufacturing activities come together to form a connection with the surrounding streetscape,” the architects write in the ArchDaily project description.
How are production and circulation made visible?
Production areas are placed behind glass, allowing passersby to glimpse people and manufacturing activity inside. A vertical circulation stair runs along the street-facing side of the building, making movement through the factory part of its public-facing elevation. The architects say this visibility is intended to communicate craftsmanship and “CREATE” to the community.

Why is the planting concentrated above ground level?
Loading and unloading finished products and materials takes place at ground level. The architects say that requirement made a continuous green buffer along the street difficult, so they placed greenery on upper floors instead. Green boxes are integrated into the structure of the projecting outdoor staircase, with planting intended to appear as if it grows from the architecture.
The project description explains this design response, but does not report measured environmental or post-occupancy results. It does not establish effects on air quality, heat, biodiversity or pedestrian wellbeing.
