The seasonally adjusted openings rate fell from 3.5% to 2.9%. The August figures are preliminary estimates.
How much did construction job openings decrease?
The seasonally adjusted estimate fell by 48,000 openings from July to August 2026. BLS reports 251,000 openings for August and 299,000 for July. Levels are rounded to the nearest thousand, so the month-to-month difference is based on the published estimates.
| Measure | July 2026 | August 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction job openings | 299,000 | 251,000 | Down 48,000 |
| Construction openings rate | 3.5% | 2.9% | Down 0.6 percentage point |
Figures are seasonally adjusted and preliminary for August. Source: BLS Table 1.
What does the openings rate measure?
The openings level counts positions open on the last business day of the month. The rate expresses those openings as a percentage of employment plus openings. In August, the 2.9% rate means openings represented 2.9% of that combined measure; it is not the share of construction workers who were unemployed or looking for work.

Total nonfarm job openings were 7.079 million in August, down 256,000 from July. BLS summarized the national figure as “little changed at 7.1 million.” That broad total provides scale, but it is not a construction-specific measure.

The construction figures above use the seasonally adjusted series for a like-for-like monthly comparison. BLS also publishes a not-seasonally-adjusted series, which reports 234,000 construction openings and a 2.7% rate for August. Those values answer a different, explicitly non-adjusted comparison and should not be substituted for the seasonally adjusted July-to-August figures.
What the decline does—and does not—show
The release establishes that the estimated number of open construction positions decreased between July and August. It does not identify a cause. The figures alone do not show whether weather, financing, project timing or another factor drove the change.

Openings are not the same as jobs lost, layoffs or a decline in construction employment. JOLTS reports openings, hires and separations as distinct measures; a lower openings count by itself does not establish what happened to employment or worker turnover.

BLS labels August 2026 preliminary, so later releases may revise it. Readers comparing this estimate with later figures should use the latest BLS series and note that revisions may affect the historical values.
