V3D Asia Ltd and Sunway University signed a memorandum of understanding on October 6, 2026, to collaborate on 3D construction printing in Malaysia. Under the announced plan, V3D Asia will place a construction printer on Sunway’s campus for students and researchers to gain hands-on experience with the equipment, materials and printing process. The reports do not say when it will be installed or confirm that it is already operating.
What the V3D Asia–Sunway agreement includes
The agreement is an education and industry collaboration, not a confirmed printer installation or a published construction project. The stated plan is to provide campus access to a V3D construction printer so students and researchers can learn directly about the technology and its materials and process. The announcement does not identify a printer model, installation schedule, training syllabus, access policy or project budget. The Edge Malaysia and VoxelMatters reported the MOU and intended campus placement on October 6.

The announced hands-on access is intended to give students and researchers experience with a construction-scale printing system, its materials and the printing process. That could help connect classroom learning with an emerging construction method, but the reports do not describe specific courses, qualifications, student numbers or measured employment outcomes.
Sunway president and vice-chancellor Sibrandes Poppema said the collaboration would let students learn using new equipment and could support their employability. That is the university’s stated expectation; no student-outcome data has been reported. V3D Asia frames the partnership more broadly as workforce and industry development in Malaysia, rather than simply selling equipment. The Edge Malaysia quoted Ono describing the ambition as building local capability in printers, homes and people, with Malaysia potentially becoming a regional supplier in the future.

What 3D construction printing means
3D construction printing, or 3DCP, uses a printer to deposit construction material in successive layers to form building components or structures. The Sunway announcement concerns education and practical exposure to the process; it does not report a specific building, demonstrate a completed project, or establish which materials or printer configuration will be used.
For construction teams, hands-on familiarity with equipment is only one part of evaluating the method. Project decisions also depend on the printer’s scale and configuration, material compatibility, applicable codes and standards, trained operators, and evidence from completed projects. The announcement does not provide details on those factors, so it should not be read as confirmation that 3DCP is approved or ready for a particular Malaysian project.

How the collaboration relates to Malaysia’s construction sector
V3D Asia’s Malaysian commercial arm, Nuvah Sdn Bhd, is separately working with Malaysia’s Construction Industry Development Board toward recognition of 3DCP as a seventh system under the Industrialised Building System framework, according to The Edge Malaysia. The Edge also reports a separate collaboration with SIRIM focused on industry standards. These are ongoing efforts, not completed approvals or published standards, and they are distinct from the Sunway MOU.
That distinction matters for contractors and project owners: a university training initiative may build familiarity and skills, while formal recognition and standards work address other conditions for wider industry use. The available reports do not establish the outcome or timing of either effort.
