Indiana University leaders and project stakeholders signed the final structural beam for the planned IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences (IU LAB) on Oct. 6, 2026, before it is installed at the construction site in Indianapolis’ 16 Tech Innovation District. IU expects the five-story, 150,000-square-foot facility to open in 2027; the beam signing marks progress, not completion.
What the beam signing marks
IU described the Oct. 6 event as a beam signing ahead of installation of the final beam. It is a visible construction milestone, but IU’s announcement does not call it a topping-out ceremony or say that the building is complete.
Those identified by IU in the beam-signing photo were IU LAB President and CEO David Rosenberg, Lilly Endowment Chairman and CEO Clay Robbins, Lilly Endowment President Jennett M. Hill, IU President Pamela Whitten, and 16 Tech President and CEO Emily Krueger. The photo is credited to Liz Kaye, Indiana University.

Where IU LAB is being built
The facility is under construction in Indianapolis’ 16 Tech Innovation District, adjacent to the Herron School of Art and Design’s Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Fine Arts Center on Indiana Avenue. IU presents the site as part of a larger innovation district rather than as a stand-alone laboratory project.

Funding and announced partners
IU says the project began with a $138 million Lilly Endowment Inc. grant announced in December 2024. IU has also identified master collaboration agreements with Cook Medical, Eli Lilly and Company, and Zimmer Biomet.

Other announced elements include the IU Health Incubator at IU LAB, with a Life Tech Accelerator powered by Plug and Play and the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. These are plans and collaborations IU has announced for the project; the building is still under construction and is not described as already operating.
