Two construction workers died in separate incidents involving iron rods and live electrical wires in Chennai, according to The New Indian Express on 6 October 2026. One incident occurred in Nanganallur and the other in Ambattur; the report does not provide investigation findings or establish responsibility.

What happened in Nanganallur?

Around noon on Monday, workers at a two-storey house under construction on Second Main Road in Hindu Colony were carrying iron rods upstairs for centering work. The rods contacted a live overhead Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) line, The New Indian Express reported.

Mangal Asra, 26, from West Bengal, died. Ramu, 54, and Guna, 48, both from Palavanthangal, suffered burn injuries.

What the incidents do—and do not—establish

The reported contact with live electrical lines describes how the workers were exposed, but it is not a complete determination of the causes. The report does not provide investigation findings, establish whether a safety rule was breached, or identify who was responsible.

Safety context for handling long metal materials near overhead lines

India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) 2023 safety regulations address rods, pipes and similar materials near bare overhead conductors. The provision states: “No rods, pipes or similar materials shall be taken below, or in the vicinity of any bare overhead conductors or lines”. Its proviso allows transport under the direct supervision of a designated or authorized person. The current application of the regulations depends on the circumstances and should not be inferred from the incident report alone. CEA regulations

As general safety guidance—not Indian law and not evidence about either Chennai site—the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identifies metal building materials as objects that can contact power lines. It advises crews to identify overhead lines, treat them as energized unless confirmed otherwise, maintain distance, and use measures such as de-energizing and grounding lines or other protections when work takes place nearby. OSHA construction guidance

  • Identify overhead lines before moving long conductive materials through or near a work area.
  • Arrange appropriate line isolation, de-energization and grounding, guarding, or other protective measures for nearby work.
  • Ensure movement of rods and similar materials follows applicable rules and designated supervision requirements.

These are worksite controls, not a problem that can be made safe by relying on consumer gloves or footwear.
