Wolfson Hospital’s New Heat System: $1.5 Million in Annual Savings Expected

Brenmiller Energy says its thermal energy storage system under construction at Wolfson Medical Center in Holon, Israel, is expected to save approximately $1.5 million a year in energy costs. That is a forecast, not a verified operating result: the company’s 2026 construction-milestone release documents progress on the build, but the available disclosures do not establish that the system has been commissioned or is delivering savings.

What is being built at Wolfson Hospital?

The project is a site-integrated thermal energy storage system connected to the hospital’s steam infrastructure—not a stand-alone replacement boiler or a consumer product. Brenmiller describes a 12 MWh bGen system intended to store heat and supply steam and hot water continuously. The company says grid electricity will charge the system during off-peak hours, and that the installation is intended to replace the hospital’s existing fuel-oil boilers.

The fuel description varies by company document. Brenmiller’s 2025 ESG report describes the boilers as heavy-fuel-oil boilers, while its earlier SEC filing calls them “old diesel boilers.” Those descriptions should not be treated as a precise, reconciled identification of the existing boiler fuel.

How much could the project save?

Brenmiller Energy’s 2026 construction-milestone release says the system is expected to generate approximately $1.5 million in annual energy cost savings. The figure is a company forecast; it is not evidence of savings already achieved.

An earlier Brenmiller SEC filing reported a different estimate: up to US$1.3 million in annual savings, attributed to estimates from the Israeli Ministry of Finance. That 2024 disclosure also attributed a potential reduction of 3,900 tons per year in the hospital’s local carbon footprint to the project. These are estimates, not measured operating outcomes. The available disclosures do not explain why the savings estimate later changed from up to US$1.3 million to approximately $1.5 million.

Neither figure should be read as a guaranteed annual saving. The reviewed sources do not provide independently verified post-commissioning energy costs, savings, or emissions results.

How the service arrangement works

Brenmiller’s SEC filing says the hospital and company signed their agreement on January 29, 2024. It describes a seven-year service arrangement. The service period begins after required regulatory approvals and commissioning provisions are met; the filing does not establish that these conditions have been completed.

  • Operations and utilities: Brenmiller is responsible for operating and maintaining the system. Wolfson supplies the electricity and water it uses.
  • Efficiency condition: The agreement provides for an annual examination of an efficiency ratio, with contractual remedies if the ratio is not met.
  • Payments and ownership option: The filing describes total service payments of approximately NIS 11.9 million and gives the hospital an option to acquire the system after the seven-year service term.
  • End of term: If the hospital does not exercise its purchase option, Brenmiller is responsible for dismantling and removing the system.

This structure is a service arrangement rather than a straightforward capital purchase by the hospital: the company takes on operation and maintenance duties, while the contract sets out efficiency conditions and end-of-term options.

What is confirmed—and what is not

Brenmiller’s 2026 release reports a construction milestone. The available project disclosures do not establish a commissioning date, completed replacement of the existing boilers, or realized savings. Until operating results are documented, the $1.5 million figure remains an expectation, not a result that can be used to judge the project’s performance.
