DEWALT TOOL CONNECT can help contractors see where compatible assets were detected through its Bluetooth-and-cellular system; it is not a guarantee of recovery or continuous GPS tracking for every tool.
How much does construction theft cost each year?
There is no reliable, exhaustive national tally that establishes a precise current annual total. Grinnell Mutual repeats an estimate of roughly $1 billion in stolen construction equipment and materials, but its guidance does not identify the original study or a measurement year. Grinnell Mutual’s construction theft guidance therefore supports treating $1 billion as a rough estimate, not a settled contemporary statistic.

The National Equipment Register (NER) described the uncertainty in a 2010 report: estimates then ranged from $300 million to $1 billion, with most estimates near $400 million. NER said no centralized, accurate, exhaustive loss database existed, and its equipment-theft estimates excluded tools, building materials, and indirect costs such as business interruption. The figures are not directly comparable to Grinnell Mutual’s broader reference to equipment and materials. NER’s 2010 report is useful context for the limits of the estimates, not proof of today’s total.
The dollar value of missing property is only part of the impact. Grinnell Mutual also identifies shutdowns and delays, replacement rentals, insurance deductibles or higher costs, rental limits, and reputational harm as possible consequences. The scale of those effects will depend on the project and the equipment involved.
#1 Best Overall
- Track any jobsite asset including large tools, pallets, material, heavy equipment, job boxes and more - regardless of brand, make or DEC041
- Last seen feature helps reduce wasted time and money by providing the street address of where the asset was last in range of your tool connect-enabled device
- Blue LED indicator light makes it easy to identify which tag you are viewing on your app, ideal for a large site with hundreds of tags
- Small and inconspicuous so it can be easily hidden on tools and equipment and therefore helps prevent tampering.
- Connects up to 100 ft of a tool connect-enabled device
Can DEWALT TOOL CONNECT find a stolen tool?
It can provide location visibility for compatible connected assets when the system detects them, but the available product information does not promise recovery. A location record means an asset was detected and reported through the system; it does not establish that the asset can be followed continuously or retrieved after theft.
DEWALT describes the DCE081 Construction Asset Gateway as a GPS-enabled, cellular-connected device with a Bluetooth scanner. It scans for nearby TOOL CONNECT assets and reports scan results to the Site Manager cloud. The gateway’s GPS position is associated with detected assets, so the practical location information comes from the gateway’s scan and reporting setup—not a GPS receiver in every tool. DEWALT’s description is manufacturer information about intended functionality, not independent evidence of recovery rates or theft reduction. DEWALT’s Construction Asset Gateway support article explains the system.

How does DEWALT TOOL CONNECT locate assets?
The system combines compatible Bluetooth assets, a gateway that scans for them, cellular reporting, and Site Manager. A scan can help a contractor see which connected assets were detected near a gateway and where that gateway reported them. Coverage and usefulness depend on compatible hardware, gateway placement, scan timing, cellular service, and the asset being within Bluetooth range when scanned.
- Connected assets: DEWALT’s TOOL CONNECT ecosystem includes connected tools and compatible tags or chips. The tag is an attachable Bluetooth ecosystem asset tag, not a standalone GPS tracker.
- Gateway scans: DEWALT says the DCE081’s default profile scans hourly. The support article also describes configurable profiles, so the timing can depend on setup.
- Reporting: The gateway sends scan results over its cellular connection to Site Manager, associating detected assets with the gateway’s GPS coordinates.
DEWALT’s U.S. support article, updated January 19, 2023, says the DCE081 ships with a CAT-M1 SIM and includes one year of cellular service in the United States; it also states a one-year warranty. Those are time- and region-specific manufacturer terms, not a guarantee for current purchases or other markets. Check the current product and service terms before choosing a system.

Which TOOL CONNECT parts and model numbers should contractors check?
Product names and SKUs differ across the cited U.S. and Canadian material, so confirm the model sold in your market and compatibility with the assets you need to manage.
| Component | What the cited DEWALT material identifies | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| DCE041 TOOL CONNECT Tag | Attachable tag listed in DEWALT Canada’s inventory catalog; part of the Bluetooth asset ecosystem. | Local availability and compatibility. It is not a standalone GPS tracker. |
| DCE042 TOOL CONNECT Chip | Chip listed in DEWALT Canada’s inventory catalog. | Which tools or assets it supports in the reader’s market. |
| Construction Asset Gateway | DCE081 in DEWALT’s U.S. support article and 2021 release; DCE082 on DEWALT Canada’s inventory page. | Correct regional SKU, current service terms, and supported assets. |
DEWALT’s Canadian TOOL CONNECT inventory-management catalog lists the DCE042 chip, DCE041 tag, and DCE082 gateway. DEWALT’s 2021 gateway launch release described Bluetooth and cellular scans and gave a six-month-per-charge battery design claim and a $399 launch MSRP. Those are historical manufacturer claims, not current pricing or service terms.

How can contractors prevent jobsite tool theft?
Asset visibility is one layer of a security plan. Grinnell Mutual recommends measures that control access, make removal harder, and improve visibility around the site. These are insurer recommendations, not a guaranteed theft-reduction rate.
- Write and enforce a site security policy, including sign-in and check-out procedures.
- Limit and lock site entrances; fence the perimeter and check it regularly.
- Use cut-resistant locks for tools and equipment, and secure trailers with ball-hitch locks.
- Consider reputable security services where practical and maintain jobsite lighting.
- Use asset scans as an inventory aid alongside physical security, not in place of it.
When deciding whether a gateway system belongs in the plan, consider what must be protected, how often compatible assets will be scanned, where gateways can be placed, cellular coverage, battery or power needs, and the ongoing costs of hardware, connectivity, and administration. Compare those costs with the operational consequences of a loss, including replacement time and rental needs.
