A lasting repair may require rebuilding the glass-to-cap connection and adding internal reinforcement—not simply filling the gap with adhesive. For an antique, valuable, fragile, or extensively damaged shade, get an experienced stained-glass or lamp-restoration specialist to assess it before attempting a repair.
Identify what has separated
“Separated shade” can describe different problems: the shade may have loosened from its metal cap, individual glass pieces may have shifted or come free from the framework, or the whole shade may have detached from its lamp support. The repair descriptions available for this problem chiefly address separation at the cap, so they do not establish one fix for every shade or failure.
Look carefully without pulling, twisting, or pressing on the shade. If glass is displaced, foil has lifted, or solder joints appear broken, treat the damage as structural rather than cosmetic. A repair account from Orchid Stained Glass notes that the weight of the glass and solder can contribute to separation at the vase cap, with foil pulled away from the top glass in its example (Orchid Stained Glass, “Tiffany-style lamp repair to top,” September 19, 2025).
Choose a repair route suited to the shade

What a specialist cap repair may involve
Lamp Shade Pro describes a repair that restores the connection between the glass assembly and cap rather than concealing the gap. Depending on the damage, the process may include removing the cap, cleaning and reframing affected glass with copper foil, soldering the pieces back into the original framework, attaching the cap from the inside, and adding copper wire along the interior perimeter. Orchid Stained Glass also describes adding wire and/or metal strips between the cap and shade as reinforcement. These are documented approaches, not a guarantee that every shade can be repaired in exactly the same way.

Copper foil tape is used to reframe glass in this kind of work, but foil alone does not secure a detached cap. The documented reconstruction also involves soldering and reinforcement. The available sources do not establish a beginner-safe soldering setup or recommend a particular iron, alloy, or kit.
When not to attempt a DIY repair
- The lamp may be a true antique or has significant value. Seek an assessment from a conservator or experienced restorer before applying adhesive, heating joints, or changing the support. Make: reports an adviser’s caution that DIY work could devalue a true antique Tiffany lamp; it does not quantify how much value might be affected.
- Glass is displaced or multiple joints have failed. These signs call for assessment of the framework and cap connection, not just a surface patch.
- You cannot tell what is carrying the shade’s weight. The epoxy-and-brass method shifts support to the sides in one particular design; the source does not show that this is suitable for other shades.
How to ask a repair shop for an estimate
One repair business says it can begin an estimate with one clear photo, the shade’s bottom width, and a description of the damage (Lamp Shade Pro / Lamp & Home Outlet). Include a view of the top connection and any visible lifted foil, shifted glass, or broken joints. This is that shop’s stated process, not a universal requirement; ask the specialist whether they need additional views or an in-person inspection.
