There is no validated build process here for a safe, scratch-built BBQ burner. A gas burner is part of a fuel-specific appliance system, not an isolated piece of metalwork. Manufacturer guidance warns against modifying appliances, changing between propane and natural gas, or enlarging burner ports. For a project involving gas, use a complete appliance designed for its fuel and follow its installation instructions and applicable local requirements.
Why a BBQ burner cannot be treated as a stand-alone project
A burner has to work as part of a matched gas system. The grill’s fuel, gas train components and burner are designed together; changing one element can affect how the appliance operates. Weber says its North American grills are designed for either propane or natural gas and that it does not allow conversions or provide conversion kits, citing safety, system complexity and the disassembly involved. Weber’s conversion guidance describes its own products; it is not a specification for every grill or a certification of a homemade design.
Weber’s installation and assembly manual says, “Do not modify the appliance,” and warns that attempting to use natural gas in an LP unit, or LP gas in a natural-gas unit, is unsafe and voids the warranty. Those warnings are specific to the appliance covered by that manual, but they illustrate why a burner cannot safely be designed by improvising parts or adapting a commercial grill component. Read the manual’s installation and assembly guidance.
What not to do
- Do not change fuel type or convert a grill unless the appliance manufacturer expressly approves that conversion and provides instructions for the specific model. Weber says it does not permit conversions or offer kits for its North American grills.
- Do not drill or enlarge burner ports. Weber’s owner’s guide explicitly says, “DO NOT ENLARGE BURNER PORTS (OPENINGS).” See the owner’s guide.
- Do not substitute regulators, alter the gas train, or repurpose a commercial burner as a homemade system. The cited sources do not validate these changes or provide safe design dimensions, drilling patterns or operating specifications.
- Do not operate a gas grill indoors or in an unventilated area. The cited manual directs that the appliance be operated outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
Codes and installation requirements
Gas installations are subject to local requirements, which vary by location and project. Weber’s general instructions refer users to applicable local codes and give ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, ANSI/NFPA 58 and CSA B149.1 as examples. Consult the general instructions, then confirm requirements with the local authority having jurisdiction and a qualified gas professional. These references are not a complete code review, approval or certification path for a scratch-built burner.

A safer route for a custom outdoor-kitchen project
- Choose a complete grill designed for the available fuel. Check the exact model and its manufacturer documentation rather than assuming a propane appliance can be changed to natural gas, or vice versa.
- Plan the installation around the appliance instructions and local requirements. Confirm location, ventilation, clearances and gas supply with the manufacturer’s documentation and the relevant local authority before construction.
- Keep the burner and gas components unmodified. If a component is damaged or needs service, use the model’s approved maintenance and service guidance rather than fabricating a replacement or altering an opening.
- Have gas work assessed by a qualified professional. A custom-built enclosure or countertop does not make an unvalidated burner design safe or code-compliant.
A manufacturer-designed product illustrates the difference between a complete appliance and a DIY specification: Weber’s Genesis S-415 page identifies a four-burner liquid-propane grill with its own designed burner system. The product page describes that grill; it does not provide instructions for building a burner from scratch.
